Is he a puppy? Puppies chew things often for the same reason babies do - they're teething. Get him a bone to chew on - sometimes that helps. Don't get him a rawhide bone, though - pieces could get lodged in his intestine and make him very ill. Or he could be chewing just because he's bored. Try buying him a variety of toys and playing with him a little every day.

If you're lucky, it's going through a teething phase. If it's not, your dog may be working off pent up agression or energy. In either case, to break the habit, buy the dog its own chew toys. Each time the dog messes up say no, take away the shoe, letter, etc., and replace with the dog toy.
