Why use the term "picking up" at all? Why not just meet people, some of whom are women, and let things happen slowly and naturally.
Go to meetings and clubs and events and have a good time, and smile at ladies who interest you, and see if they smile back. One or two may. You can say "hello," or wait until they do, and then follow their lead.
A man does not have to be the aggressor all the time, but he needs to be sensitive to a woman's need for reassurance. If she does not see you are interested, she will protect her own ego by deciding she is not interested in you. If, on the other hand, you do no more than smile, it can be enough for her to let you know that she is interested. You can take it from there, but go slowly. Enjoy every step of the way.

First, change your attitude toward women.
"Picking up women" is not the idea.
What you want to do is meet women and get to know them in the hope that you will find a good woman that you have a connection with.
Start by talking with them about things you have in common.
Show them your natural sense of humor.
Show them that you think they are special.
Show them that you are a confident man who has a financially secure future to offer a family.
Try this approach.

Visit a psychologist, and try to face your fears, believe me you have nothing to lose, yes you will probably screw up the first couple of times, but after that your shyness and fears will gradually disappears and you’ll be able to make effective communications.

you should be wearing the 'pants' in the relationship...
let her know you care about....
when you talk to her, look into her eyes...
eye contact is definitely a good thing...
and learn how to flirt....
but not too much...
it can be a turn off
