Cancer is hard on everyone involved and if this man is dying then he may want to live out his life without being pitied. By not telling anyone he will have some normalcy for awhile. I don't know the whole story about why you are feeling so pushed away by the family. But if the cancer issue is why you aren't feeling like part of the family, then you may be a little selfish. This is not something a cancer patient wants everyone to know, not because they do not like you, but they don't want people to start grieving for them in their presence and it does happen. Try to be understanding and let the family deal with this the way he wishes.

i kinda know how you feel...my dads side of the family is very quiet about things and private to a t....sometimes i dont get wind of important things until long after they have happened...if after 16 years they have not let you in as part of the family you simulate your own family with your children...let them know they can come to you for anything...always be truthful and honest and help one another figure things out. so that you dont have a family situation like your father in laws....cancer isnt something you can heal yourself and family is what you need be supportive but dont worry about dealing with the secrecy...you just be supportive

Now there's a "SHOCKER", the in-laws know everything about you, yet keep their side of the family secret, thats why In-laws (I call them out-laws SUCK), their always medling, yet stand clear, when it gets too hot, they have driven a wedge down my family, I have a brother and a sister that I have NOT talked to in about 10 years, I hate being from an Irish family, clearly the STUPIDEST race ever to walk the earth !
yes I'm 100% Irish American !

Hi! I'm wendy from malaysia. Yes, I'm understand the matter/problem you're facing now. No matter what, life must still need to keep going ok! We must live happily everday or may be you should pray to god to overcome your problem, so you won't feel stress or something. Last but not least, try to be happy all the time and the most important is you must be positive and also be open minded ok? ok, good luck!

Don't dwell on this issue. Alot of families are like this. Secrets, Secrets, Secrets. Seems like all of us who are in-laws are never totally acceptable and trustworthy to some degree.

sorry to hear that, is sad they feel that way towards you. make the most of the time you have with your father in law, and forget about what the rest of the family thinks.
