Poor mans chicken???? Turkey is way better than chicken. My granny puts on a spread, including, turkey, ham, cabbage rolls, stuffing, perogies, chefs salad, ceasar salad, greek salad, fresh rolls, mashed potatos, gravy, scalloped potatos and some other trimmings, she cooks for 2 days, but I have a big family and it's yearly tradition to go to grannies on christmas day, been going for over 30 years, can't wait until tomorrow. YUM YUM
Merry Christmas

You've never had roasted duck for Christmas? Or a nice Christmas ham? Or roast beef? People eat these at Christmas.
Each family has a different tradition. Yours is turkey for Christmas, mine is ham. And turkey is only one part of the dinner anyway, don't forget the pies and cakes and such.

Shame that everyone seems to hate eating Turkey at Christmas! Personally I think it's a shame that so many poor Turkey's are bred and slaughtered just to fill an intolerable greedy species' need to over indulge! Indigestion anyone? GOOD!!!

I hate turkey too. I always do a chicken for Christmas dinner and sometimes a boiled ham with it. It's all the trimmings that make it really Christmas dinner as opposed to just a roast chicken dinner though! I'd like to do a goose one year but they're usually much too big for my small oven.

the original christmas bird was goose, but for some reason people tend to eat turkey now. I have no idea why as both turkey and chicken are very bland meats, especially if they are not free-range. Personal i would have duck if it was my choice alone, however my husband can't stand duck and we generally o to his or my parents and they only ever do turkey.... YUK!! x x

Having goose and beef this year. Before you say it , no, goose is not fatty if you cook it correctly. so there . Happy Christmas to all. Lets strive for world peace in the new year.

"Poor man's chicken" is a purely relative term. If you were starving to death(here's hoping you never are) and were offered a plate of roast turkey, would you turn your nose up at it?
On a different note, it is advocated that we eat turkey much more often rather just at Christmas. It is the leanest meat available, and good for you.
Enjoy!

Eating turkey is not, as yet, a statutory requirement. Do you think the food police has been formed? At the moment it's just surveillance cameras every 5 metres.
