A legal requirement of your state? I doubt it. However, it may be a legal requirement IF your contract with your chosen venue demands it. State and Federal laws don't typically extend to wedding reception policies, but contract law goes EVERYWHERE.
If you're a celebrity or your reception is going to be the biggest party ever and details are printed in your local paper, you'll want someone checking invites at the door. Otherwise, it's probably not worth it to keep out the potential wedding crashers.

It sounds like you are talking about a wedding bouncer, which isn't a bad idea, especially if you have a large wedding, or any wedding with more than 100 guests. Is it a LEGAL requirement? No.
A door supervisor can prevent unwanted, uninvited guests from crashing your reception. There are a number of ways, including showing the invitation, and ID at the door. This seems drastic, but is something to consider if you are worried about unwanted crashers showing up at your wedding. Uninvited guests take more than food and drink at weddings.
Good luck.

No there are no legal requirements at all for a wedding reception. You might have a door person to direct people to their tables or to show them where to sign the guest book or leave a gift but that would be about it, unless you expect some sort of trouble at the reception like a brawl or people stealing things. Good Luck

It depends on the alcohol - each state is a little different, but many require some sort of security personal such as a door supervisor if alcohol is being served

It depends on the venue. Each venue has it's own requirements, I would ask each venue you are considering as some of these costs can be very high once added up to the rental fee.

You think the police have nothing better to do with their time?
Sorry Chief, can't investigate the mass murder, there are a lot of weddings on today.

It's not a legal requirement, but the venue might want you to have one. Depending where you are, it might be wise to have at least one.
