Having been through this many times with retrievers, and at risk of everyone here screaming at me, my advice is to just keep a careful eye on him for a day or two. If he begins to act as if something is wrong (but I'll bet that won't happen), then take him to the vets.
I've had retriever pups eat socks, entire fishes (bones and all) they found on the beach, etc. Socks are a particular favorite, for some reason. As I said, I've been through it.
Keep on eye on your pup, and as in all things, this sock too shall pass!

A sock is rather a large item and can soak up liquid and expand. This could make it difficult to pass through in the natural way. My dog a little cairn terrier ate his lead, yes the whole lead without the metal bits and it came through whole. Once it showed at the back end I gave it a gentle pull and bit by bit it came out. It all happened in 12 hours so we knew that he was OK. If I were you I would get the opinion of a Vet pretty quick. These things always seem to happen over a holiday period when help is not readily available. Try to have a great Christmas and I hope your lovely little doggy is OK.

I had something similar happen with my Cat.
You should have headed to an Emergency Vet place immediately. They would have done things to try to make it vomit it up.
Now it is likely to late for that. Your Puppy may need surgery as things like that stretch through the diagestive system,.. then snag on something random,... then they either pull things closer together that shouldn't be pulled together or they cut through organs. Any which way the Sock is likely to obstruct something some where.
While some people may end up recommending you to just wait it out,.. that is not such a common result. It is more likely for a Dog to die mysteriously or the problem to be discovered in surgery. Alot of logical thinking might make you think the stumock acid would take care of it,.. but things cycle through the body too quickly.
You should go check with a Vet or an Emergency Vet as soon as posible. They might tell you something simple to help your dog.

Hi,
I agree with the majority of your answers, get him to a vet ASAP.
A large & older dog will probably just pass it through his system, but a smaller critter, the item could stick in the digestive system, possibly a terminal situation.
Oh, and put the remaining sock out of reach!
All the best to you & the dog.
Mine eat a small toy bear last year, but it came out the other end no problem, but better spend a few quid to make sure.
Cheers,
Bob.

Keep an eye on him and make sure that he is not having any problems going to the bathroom. It could take up to 4 days to pass the sock. Any sign of constipation could be a blockage of the instestines and will require surgery.
Next time this happens, take action immediately. Peroxide will make the dog throw up, just do not use if the dog has injested poisons. Here's a site with the dosage by weight

You don't mention his age - if he is big enough and it is a trainer sock - he may be able to pass it through. If he shredded it up before swallowing it this makes it a smaller problem for obvious reasons.
If I were you I would contact the vet and ask their opinion on when or if you should take action.
It can take a while for the impact of a stuck sock to show in your puppy's condition and they can do a lot of internal damage without you realising whats going on. They may suggest that the safest route is to whip it out before and damage happens.

As a dog owner myself I would say take him to the vet just to be on the safe side. My dog eats odd things sometimes but a sock could get tangled up inside him. For your peace of mind its best to take him just to make sure.

An ordinary sock - or a Christmas stocking sock. If it had something in it, you can't blame him for eating it. Take him to a vet.

Take your dog to a vet. At the vet clinic I work at dog ate underwear, the dog pooped but it did not come out. the dog got very sick and almost died. We had to do surgery to get the underwear out, it was all tangled up in the intestines. We saved the dog, but very costle surgery.

I would take it to the vet as a precaution, but chances are your pup will be passing some stringy business in a day or two.
