Hey Harmohit3,

Your family tree is unique to you. You will not find it anywhere unless you have a sibling putting it together. You must create your own.

Start with yourself, you birth certificate. Interview all livinging family members for Births, Deaths, Marriages (BMD), in each branch of surname. (your mother knows about 2, your father knows about 2). Each Grandparent represents 2 more branches. As you go back in time document all of the people as connected from their child to their parents. After you have all that you can get from your living relatives, then you start collecting BMD vital records, and wills, probate, obits, pictures, stories, bible family records, cemetary records, etc.

You can get information from the internet in a variety of places. First you should organize the information you know. Do that with Software. Listed below are some packages.

Depending on your Surname (and other surnames from your mother and Grandmothers) you will then begin a variety of searches with a variety of tools. First, you should know how to get vital records (BMD).

Get BMD from the town where the event occured, first. If you cannot get it from there (write, call, visit) then go to the next level of government up, county, state, province, etc. These records are critical to your knowing who are the parents of the person you are getting the records for. Each BMD record lists the parents, where they are from and age or birth date.

Another place to look is Family Search by LDS. Family Tree has trees that you might be able to merge into your tree. Other software has that type of intelligence too. If you are lucky to fill up a branch that way, remember that is not proof... You are only accepting someones word that is the tree.

Genforum is a place where people post information and ask questions about a specific surname. Say your mothers maiden name for example, so you find the main page of Genforum for that surname, review the postings for any applicability, then if you find something start talking about it.

Here are some additional sites. But you will not find YOUR personal tree there.

Start by Talking to relatives that are still breathing, if they are alive this helps with the conversation. (HAHAHAHA!!) Then go and find what cemeteries the rest are buried and collect dates and places. Then cross reference their birth and death dates with local papers to find obituaries and birth announcements. These usually have "surviving family members" or number of siblings within the family, sometimes the last names don't match up. It takes some time but this should give you a good foundation for at least three to four generations back, depending on immigration from other countries and lost (Miss placed or burned) records, but you can still access most of this info from over seas. Good luck, and I hope you find what you're looking for. I did!!!

It appears you are from India. In india, there used to be one special person from charan / barot / gadhvi community who was keeping family history of one entire cast in a state or region. He was having all these history in his books. Now a days, this tradition is non existant. Talk to some elderly person of your cast. He might be knowing the person who is / was keeping family tree. If you find the person, you can get history of 100 years or even more. Their records are very reliable. There are some court cases where courts have relied on the records of this barot / charan.

There are hundreds of sources on the web; some good and some not so good, some free and some not free but for a starter,
go to this one http://ancestry.com/ And don't forget to ask you older relatives for information too.
