As stated, Maya, lightwave, 3Dmax are among the very best ... all very pricey as well ... and none of them are easy to use. All have a steep learning curve that require many hours of learning and practice ... but it's well worth the effort to learn!! Just be patient and stick with it!

Maya has an educational version that is free to anyone ... it has a few key features branded or disabled, but is mostly fully functional, and is so you can learn how to use it.

XSI Foundation. One of if not the best 3d modelling application about, As stated by someone else, this is also a bit pricey but there are student discounts available. If you are after 2d animation you cant go wrong with a good helping of Macromedia Flash MX2004 / Studio 8. Hope this Helps.
