A waste of energy. People call it xmas spirit but they have been completely taken by the consumerism of the season. It is tasteless and.....it's called light pollution! Birds and wild animals already have disrupted cycles because of city lights, this makes it worse. Unless you live deep in the countryside when was the last time you were able to see the stars properly or enjoy a proper dark night.

Well for starters the world would be waiting a long long time for me to be bothered to go to the effort of putting all that christmas stuff on my house. I find the effort of putting the tree up enough. I wonder just what sort of life people with that amount of time to be bothered doing it lead. I also would question the amount of money that is going to charity against the amount of energy used, in a world where we are told to conserve, conserve, conserve. I myself wouldn't want a whole pile of strangers driving past my house to have a captain cook (look), but then each to his own.

this is definitely a case of less is more. it can look not too bad if only a few decorations but some houses in my neighbourhood have gone way way overboard and it just looks sad and embarassing to see.
whilst some may say my answer shows a lack of christmas spirit i can assure you that this is not the case at all.
however does one really need to look like they live in some inner city chav fest. i find myself avoiding inviting friends and aquaintances over in december as in truth i am deeply embarrased for them to see it..

It all started with some national lampoon movie as I recall.
It strikes me as a bit "chavvy" to be honest.
They are being tacky but in their mind they think they are making a PARODY of tackiness, which is even worse. They think it is tongue in cheek. But maybe it's a cry for help?
It doesn't show much respect for the environment, I know THAT.

When energy is expensive it is a waste of money. I am sure that if I lived next door to a house like that, I would go on holiday at Christmas.

Where i lived in Cambridgeshire,a bloke used to do his house up to the nines with lights and decorations, and they did look good.
He done it for his pleasure, but if people gave him money for it,it would always go to charity.
A couple of years ago, some nasty so and so,wrecked one of his inflatable garden ornaments, and he refused to do it again.
It was such a shame, because when his house was lit up,you knew Christmas was on it's way.

Oh you meanie. We take our children to see the lights at Christmas. It's not for long and they do look pretty (obviously not if you live next door!) I'm all for the lights, as long as I don't have to pay the bill. Happy New Year.xx

I think that by showing their Christmas spirit and sharing a nice holiday light show with their neighbors, they are being great neighbors, especially since they're sacrificing so much money for the electric bill.

humorous? Naw, i'm Canadian. i imagine it reads like a truth sheet more beneficial than a shaggy dog tale. definite, we frozen Canadians can snicker at it too. gorgeous. (i'm in Toronto, yet from the praries and the start of moose season is a holiday. that's authentic) Come for a visit. Canada is amazingly captivating.

I have a couple neighbors that do it. It is fine by me, I think it is nice, doesn't bother me at all. As a matter of fact it cheers me up. Its their money for electricity and lights. Its also a free country. I'm glad there are people around that do that.
