I've seen some pretty interesting theories about this year in Wikipedia. I'm just wondering what the community thinks of this. Supposedly something is supposed to happen in or around December 21, 2012.

The world will not come to an end in 2012.

the Mayans discovered that the solar system goes through very long cycles where the solar system does above and below the plane of the milky way galaxy. Much like the old fashioned biorythm charts.

the year 2012 just means it will be an end of one of those cycles that last approximately 11,500 years.

2012 just means we will be level with the plane of the milky way galaxy and we will start another 11.500 year cycle.

The Mayan calendar isn't ending. The 12th Baktun is ending. It's like when we went from 1999 to 2000 (except that a Baktun is 396 years long). On 12-21-2012, the 13th Baktun begins. The calendar can go up to 20 Baktuns, and then whatever's beyond that (never heard a name for it) --it's like an odometer except new columns can always be added to the left.
As far as the world ending goes, on that same date (12-21-2012) there is a grand astronomical alignment between the sun and the Milky Way at dawn which to the Maya signified the rebirth of the sun. Birth, not death.

A lot of people feel that the end won't come in their lifetime, but I think those are the people who will get the Greatest shock of their life, but as for the date, or the year you mentioned 2012, well nobody really knows the time, but it has to come in somebody's life time, and it could really come anytime soon, sooner than2012, or later, whatever time it comes it will not be guessed by anyone even Jesus didn't know when exactly, it would come, but he did tell his desciples about the things that would be going on in the end times and these things that are part of an collective sign that would mark his presenceit is all hapening now in our time.

Here are some other end of the world dates:

1533
Beginning of the Millennium, Anabaptists (Luther Martin, Date Setters, Guardian of Truth, Sept. 15, 1994)

1533
Christ's Coming and Judgment at 8:00 AM October 19, 1533; Michael Stiefel (1486-1567) Acq. with Martin Luther, and taken into Luther's home when he had not given away all possessions. (Luther Martin, Date Setters, Guardian of Truth, Sept. 15, 1994)

1533
End of the world, preceded by 3-1/2 years of apocalyptic tribulation. (Melchoir Hoffman, from S German Imperial Free City of Schwabish Hall.) Associated with Srousbourg Anabaptists, some called Melchoirites Emphasized "inner" word to "outer" written word (Gary K. Waite "David Joris and Dutch Anabaptism 1524-1543" Wilfrid Laurier University Press (Waterloo, Ontario), 1990.)

1534
A repeat of the Muntzer affair occurred a few years late. This time Jan Matthys took over the city of Munster. The City was to be the only one spared destruction. The inhabitants of Munster, chased out by Matthys and his men, regrouped and lay siege to the city. Within a year everyone in the city was dead.

1534
Easter: April 5, 1534 Return of Christ; Jan Mattijs, a "prophet" replacing Melchoir Hoffman (see 1533) who was imprisoned. Claimed Munster, not Strasbourg was the New Jerusalem; later Amsterdam. (Gary K. Waite "David Joris and Dutch Anabaptism 1524-1543" Wilfrid Laurier University Press (Waterloo, Ontario), 1990.)

1572
Benedictus Aretius of Berne (1505-1547) calculated that 1260 years added to the year Constantine made Christianity the official religion (312+1260=1572) should be the year. (Luther Martin, Date Setters, Guardian of Truth, Sept. 15, 1994)

1621

1666
To the citizens of London, 1666 was not a banner year. A bubonic plague outbreak killed 100,000 and the Great Fire of London struck the same year. The world seemed at an end to most Londoners. The fact that the year ended with the Beast's number (666), didn't help matters either.

1666
generated much discussion as it was 1000 + 666 (Luther Martin, Date Setters, Guardian of Truth, Sept. 15, 1994)

1715
Christ's coming; Isaac Newton, a note in his research on the Law of Gravity (Luther Martin, Date Setters, Guardian of Truth, Sept. 15, 1994)

The world has to end sometime, but this is not it. There is a simple logic to this: no man knows the day or the hour of the end of the world. Every attempt to pinpoint it has proved to be an embarrassment. As soon as you decide on a date, you effectively prevent it. This is why it would be wise if more people lived each day like their last.

The world's problems are almost overwhelming—and not just because of the wars and conflicts that grab the headlines. Every day, millions of people all over the world face a host of other disasters: famine, disease, economic chaos, racism, ecological and natural catastrophes, and so forth.

Do these mean Jesus' second coming is very near? It certainly may be, because He indicated that just before He comes again the world 's problems will increase. He declared, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places" (Matthew 24:7). While these problems are part of every age, the Bible says they will increase in intensity toward the end.
The only final answer to our problems is Jesus Christ, for when He comes again, He will rule the world with perfect justice and peace. In that day, the Bible says, "He will reign ... with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever" (Isaiah 9:7).

The Bible cautions us against trying to set the date for Jesus' second coming. But it also urges us to be ready and watchful "while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ" (Titus 2:13). Are you ready for that day? You can be, by committing your life to Christ today
