Your best shot is right behind the shoulder in the ribs. This is where their vital organs are located.

The best place to shoot a deer depends the angle. For a broadside shot 1/3 of the way up the body above the front leg. This gives you the most room for error. On a quartering away or quartering towards shot aim at the opposite side front leg. The head and neck shots are terrible choices since there isn't much room for error. You could hit the top or botton jaw with a head shot that would eventially kill the deer from starvation but you wouldn't recover it. There is too much non-vital tissue in the neck to try that shot too. If you happen to hit the spine it would put the deer down but if you just hit the windpipe there wouldn't be much of a blood trail to follow and it would take a long time for the deer to die. You owe it to the animal to make sure you are taking the highest possible shot to insure a quick clean kill. I've heard lots of stories from people that came into the gun shop I worked at about the deer that they made "perfect neck shots" on and just found a little hair and almost no blood. I've also seen deer that have had one or both jaws shot off and was glad that they happened to walk past someone that took a heart/lung shot. You might lose a little meat with a shot behind the shoulder but it's better than having a wounded deer to run off and become coyote food.

As close to the truck as possible! Seriously, try to imagine the dead center of the chest and aim to put the bullet there no matter how the deer is positioned if you are shooting a firearm. Try to do the same with a bow on broadside and quartering-away shots.

Aim for the back edge of the front shoulder, about 2/3 of the way down from the top of the deer's back, and shoot when the deer is broadside to you. You will hit the lungs and possibly even the heart. If you are very good with your rifle, you can try a head shot, aiming at the base of an ear. Only try head shots if you are confident in your marksmanship and the deer holds its head still.

Side shot - right in the lungs, just behind the shoulder. Head on - head or heart. From behind and above - between the shoulders in the middle of the back, as to exit the middle of the chest. From straight behind and on the ground - don't take the shot! You may also want to read some answers from someone who has actually killed a deer...I'm bagging my first tomorrow...I hope!

You want to aim approx. right behind the crease in there shoulder blade if you are broadside. If they are quartering away just in front of the edge of the rib cage. If they are facing you and only at close range with a larger caliber or 12 gauge aim right between the shoulder blades. I dont like neck shots, alot of people take them but they are risky. you can easily miss the spine and just injure them. And dont try spineing a deer also. Alot of people try to do that but can easily miss and injure them also.
With my marlin bolt action 12ga. with a rifled barrel i have actually started aiming right at the shoulder. It hits hard enough to knock them down, penetrate bone and still damage heart and lungs. I have yet to have one run anywhere doing that where when i aim right behind the shoulder i have had to track them quite a distance.

It depends on a few factors. How the deer is standing in relation to your position, how good of a shot are you, what position are you shooting from, prone, kneeling, standing, supported or unsupported. Depending on your shooting ability and the range of the shot, I always prefer a head shot, no tracking after wards and no loss of meat. Makes butchering(if you do it yourself) much easier and less chance of tainting the taste of the meat.

For distant shots and if you want to mount the trophy, the broadside heart/lung shot is best. Aim right behind the shoulder about 1/3rd up from the chest. Of course on really long shots your aim point will have to be adjusted for bullet drop.

If the deer is quartering towards you, aim just in front of the near shoulder a few inches above the bottom of the body. If it is quartering away from you, aim just behind the near shoulder.

It is always best to have an experienced hunter with you to advise you on your shots untill you get the hang of it. Happy hunting!!

If you are a good shot I would say to shoot them in the neck where the neck and head join together.I would not try this shot unless I was 100% sure you can make it a clean kill.If you can't make this shot try for the heart or lungs. The most important thing to remember is shot placement. No need for sloppy kills and having to track wounded animals.Sloppy shooting and wasted game animals give all hunters a bad name.

TEXAS HEART SHOT-right up the pooper!
tears up the innards real good, fouls up the meat but a quick recovery and thorough cleaning handles that.
seriously- a double lung/heart is the quickest/most humane shot.
spine shots will drop it but usually require a follow-up shot.
i have personally seen head shot deer survive and not be found;one friend recently tagged a doe that had been shot the year before and was missing part of its jaw and face.
NO HEAD SHOTS PLEASE!!!!!!!!

what is shoot? Real hunters use their hands, claws, and teeth to kill their prey - then again when you don't have teeth from the pepsi and run too slow from all the potato chips, I guess the gun is the only option for fat Americans.
