READ as much as you can. When you discover new words, write them down. Keep a little word journal. Try them using them in your everyday language, and use them here on Answers. Research shows kids must be exposed to a word 18 times to master it; I'm sure that it's less for adults. Studies show that well-read individuals tend to exhibit more prowess in terms of vocabulary. Don't waste your money on one of those books "Improve your Vocabulary and Sound smart in two weeks". Just go to the library read real literature, novels, and magazines like the New Yorker. You will sound more articulate and intelligent in no time.

Read, read, read. Have conversations with intelligent people. Watch television shows that teach and have new words. There are also vocabulary-building books available although I am unsure if they provide much benefit. I think you have to use...or is it hear...you have to use or hear a word something like 70 times before it becomes a regular part of your vocabulary. Don't quote me on that last part...it's been a while since I was educated!

Vocabulary power comes from reading books.I get approximately 20 words a day reading a simple German book.Tv is the next best thing ,after you've read a book ,get yourself some words you don't know.
After you've done these 2 things ,practice the words by repeating them and creating sentences.Do this every day and you will be speaking English better than me :)

There are books on grammar, if it is English you are interested in. Some books on grammar are really easy to read, have humor in them which makes things easier to understand. Browse a large bookstore in the area they can direct you to for learning grammar or vocabulary. The prime way of getting that good vocabulary is keeping your interest in doing it!

Reading is about the best way. If you run across a word you don't know, look it up and try to use those words in everyday life.
While fantasy novels have many fun words, it can be difficult to use words like defenestrate, and quaff in everyday life though...

there are many good books and tapes at your local book store. Otherwise, some of the handheld dictionaries are really good tools for learning words.

read and buy a good vocab book. however, this does not guarantee that you will suddenly become more eloquent...you need to practice with these new words as well, you probably will not be able to retrieve them from your memory if you don't do this.
