his work threatens their faith

Because many of them think like Julia Encarnaci does. Evolution is in fact well supported by the fossil record, and if Julia knew anything about how fossilization works, she would know that the few fossils we do have, which represent only a tiny fraction of all the species that have lived, support evolution extremely well. Statements to the contrary are not supported by any serious scientist, and are exclusively fundamentalist propaganda with no basis in fact. Fundamentalists have lately been clinging to the phrase that evolution is JUST a theory. That is tue, it is a theory, but it is a theory in the same sense that gravity is JUST a theory, or that our basic physical laws are JUST theories. There is almost no dispute among scientists today that evolution accurately describes proccesses that really go on, and it is almost certainly true. Saying that scientists think it is JUST a theory is misusing the concept of a scientific theory and playing around with words to confuse people that don't know much about the topic. It is dishonest and proves nothing about the truthfullness of evolution.

To get more to the point, religious people are against darwin and evolution because it directly contradicts the bible, and what their parents told them when they were growing up. Most of the people want to feel special. They want to think that Someone is looking out for just them, someone created them with love, someone made this place for them, and no one else. People think that they are the most important thing in the universe, and will sacrifice reason and logic to achieve that feeling. Darwin took away the only credible reason to ever belive in creationism, which was the argument from design. Before darwin, there was no good reason to explain HOW all of these apparently designed things (such as human eyes, antelopes, and anteaters) came to be, except that someone made them. After all, everything that looked like it had been designed in those days actaully HAD been. If you find a watch on the shore, you assume it was made by someone, not that it just came to be. But darwin had to go and ruin that by showing that random variation put through the sieve of natural selection was a good way to explain the diversity and apparent design of life. And christians have been angry to have their cozy thought of a personal god coddling them taken away ever since.

The simplest response is that Darwin caused them to have to think about heir beliefs, and a great many religions do not advocate questioning one's faith. A more in depth answer is that not all religious people are against Darwin, but many oppose acceptance of his Theory of Evolution because it seemingly contradicts what their Holy Books say about the creation - however, if they would actually read darwin, they might find it's not as oppositional to their beliefs as they have been told.

Religions are all based on the fudamental concept of ABSOLUTE. There is something ULTIMATE, beyond time and space, REAL etc.... be it given the name Brahma, Parmatama, Ishwar, God, Allah or any other name.
Then there is the concept that whatsoever exists is CREATION. Therefore, there should be a CREATOR.
CREATION is further of two basic types, animate and animate. Even among animate creation, MAN is a SPECIAL CREATION.
Thirdly, a CREATION can not ever understand fully its own CREATOR and has to depend only on FAITH.
Darwin centralized the concept of EVOLUTION. Taken to logical end, it means EVOLUTION of NON_EXISTENCE towards EXISTENCE. Then the evolution of animate from inanimate and gradually the evolution of MAN. The concept of evolution does not find MAN anything special or final state in the evolution. What direction would evolution take further may not be clear today but it certainly would continue.
Thus, it brings a concept totally different from that of CREATION
in which a CREATOR is needed, FAITH is essential and MAN is SPECIAL, final creation.
EXTREMISM, of any kind is also based on ABSOLUTE FAITH in some REAITY, CONCEPT etc.
Extremism and religion thus, are fundamentally on a side opposite to that of Evolutionism.
Some people on both sides point out the similarity between NATURE of Evolutionism and CREATOR of religion and Darwin's natural selection being akin to Creator's Will.
However, as I pointed out it is not not needed to have atleast Creation for the first time after which evolution may proceed. Existence can be thought of as evolved from non-existence, state of Non-being evolving into state of Being.
Why do extremists and religionists hate Darwin? I can not say. May be it is fear of being asked to abondon the cosy world of a child that has some GREAT POWERFUL PROVIDER PROTECTOR overlord. Such a world is certainly highly comforting to any person, it is even to me.

Why you ask. Partly because Darwin did not take his theory far enough for some.
And the Extremists only start with the creation of ADAM and EVE. and ignore what the Bible says was happening before then.
All things are just as they were then as now.
The most obvious fact is that something has to be created before it can evolve to adapt to its living area.

Yes, we all ought to be up in arms against the current war against Darwin! I want to see mockups of the HMS Beagle and finch beaks made from Christmas lights. I want to Mary in the manger with the chubby baby Darwin, while Dawkins, Hawking, and Leonardo bring him presents.

Ah, barnacles,

Laz

for those who stipulate evolution is only theory: gravity is also called theory and that u have faith or not u still have to fall...
They are against Darwin coz they have basic blind faith impossible to think wider... TYhey don't see there holy books like allegories of life, symbolic of moral and behaviour to create rule and order in human society...
Religion cope with society and evolution with universe.
Furthermore they have to realise that most of serious scientist ,who can only agree with darwin to be called so , finally see the existence of supernatural power like evidence... The extremist just focus on details that put their beliefs unbalanced but therei s no reason to oppose both.

For guraqt2me: This acceleration of evolution is well known from scientist and drive to modified laws of evolution but in no way put down evolution theory. It is called speciation crisis in which external factor increase the rate of evolution. SOme genes bear high speed rate of mutation and other slwo whether their result on life function is letal or not. And the lack of some mail in the chain of evolution is due to very poor sample of ancient time like in primary era, especially with beings with no mineral support like bone or chitine... Studying embryology u would see evidence of evolution through growing of foetus.

"Extremists" and "religious people" are not the only ones against Darwin -- so are a lot of scientists, because his theories on evolution are not highly supported by the fossil record.

It's not scientific to believe in Darwin's theories because they have not been proven. That's why they are called THEORIES.

The Bible has been accepted as a whole, and if you choose to do so, you accept it as a whole.
Darwin made a MANMADE theory, which he later admitted was flawed.
You can accept the theory of creation, as it cannot be scientifically proven, though there is evidence to back it up, or accept the theory of evolution, with its limited scientific backing.
