It bases itself around family apparently, but my fiance was kicked out of home for not wanting to be a mormon, physically abused by her parents in her youth, and constantly reminded that if she didn't go to church, she'd burn in hell.

Why do this bunch of religious nut jobs manage to attract new members, other than praying on the week with promises of answers to all their problems.

It's terrible what happened to your fiance, but it's a logical fallacy to accuse the LDS church. It's the family that was messed up. There's a whole heck of a lot of screwed up mormons, but that doesn't make the whole church bad. The mormons aren't perfect people. There's a lot of mormons that give them a bad name, but ultimately they're a positive force in the universe. If you try to look for the bad in something, you'll always find it. Try looking on both sides. There are a lot more good mormons than bad ones.

They attract new members because what they teach simply makes people happy. You don't have to believe what they teach to understand that it can make someone happy.

I'm a mormon if you haven't already figured that out. I'm 18 years old. I have a lot of trials in my life; more than a lot of people my age. I have significantly large choices to make in my near future that effect the rest of my life (and possibly my eternal salvation). I was born into this religion and I'm old enough now to decide if I believe in it. I struggle all the time with it. I'm a person who thinks completely based on logic and reason. Logic and reason tell me the church isn't true. I don't follow my feelings, which is what the church does mostly. So I struggle to know for myself if it is true (based on logic and reason). But even with that said, I do understand that I will be happy if I live my life as a mormon. Can you understand that? The mind power of believing in something like what the mormons teach is enough to make you happy no matter if it's true or not. Do you follow? I've decided that whether its true or not, I will live a happy life believing it. Maybe I'll die and find out it wasn't true, but at least my life was a good one. Right?

I can say (based on my own experiences and personal feelings) that no matter what I do in my life, whether I choose to go against everything I've been taught or be a mormon, that the church is true. Maybe I'm not strong enough to live it, but I can promise you it's the one and only true church on the earth.

Once again I'm sorry about your fiance. It's too bad her parents tried to force her into something that was her decision. I'm sorry her experience put a bad name on mormons in your eyes. But you need to understand that no one and no thing is perfect, and there's always something messed up about the church.

physical abuse is enough to file complaints at the police.
even christians are guilty of these things, its an aborant evil had among all peoples and religion.

Well for instance I joined the church because i had personal Revelation, that only this church teaches. but I left the church because there is secret combinations and other wickedness in it. I would not have left because of my own personal sins and transgressions I WOULD"VE tried faithfully to continue and work out my Own salvation with much tears and sincerity. But i just saw too much wickedness. Church leadership has its OUTSTANDING morality and always teaches many things and has many insights through Continuous revelations.

However, there are OTHER MORMON sects that are not so holy either! such as polygimists! polygamy was banned by church heirarchy in the 19 th century. some profess that it continues to this day but I dont believe it. There are witchcrafts and sorceries in every church and relgion, and many are LIKE the daughters of lott who drugged and raped their own Father in the name of RAISING RIGHTEOUS seed, this is a secret combination and a secret society that has always existed in the world and all religions. see gen 19:9,32-36 jst
I joined this church because of personal revelation. I saw 3 visions myself! of Jesus christ in proportion to my faith and humility and sincerity of the promises made in this church.
but the biggest reason was "first vision" of Joseph Smith who was told NOT to join any church by God the father and Jesus the son who appeared to him in that vision.
I think if this VISION WAS absolutely the vision of God, than there is NO other church on earth !!! christian or muslim or Jew that even compares to coming to the truth. However even within the Book of Mormon, the people of God waxxed exceedingly unrighteous, so to with the chosen people of Israel, and the terrorists and hate mongers in Islam.

LDS have done their homework... they understand how people think, and tailor their message using the latest in audio/visual technology to create a compelling message on behalf of Mormonism.

All their music, their video productions, and even their temples and hospitality are top-notch. The image they present is one that is very wholesome and attractive to a people living in a society that questions whether anything can be simple anymore. They insist people consider *how they feel* rather than *what they think* when it comes to whether or not LDS is even true at all, and they are aggressive in what we might call their public relations campaign...

The problem I see with this is if you base your decision purely on the basis of feeling, then you've staked your life and perhaps more on a temporal feeling that may turn out to be wrong. But as the advertising industry has shown, if you know how to present your product well, and in a way that appeals to the most amount of people (independently of whether or not your method of presentation may be deceptive), people are likely to buy it at face value.

It was conceived by man , therefore it is ruled by mans` laws not God`s . Man likes to follow after things of the world in a religion because man can be responsible for his actions > Man`s personal idea of a worldly based religion is like a " buffet " dinner , you can attend the dinner and go through the "buffet" line picking & choosing what you want off of the buffet table ! Man based religion can`t follow GOD`s menu , as you cannot pick out of the gospel what you want to do , and don`t want to do . GOD`s buffet line is based on HIS teachings . You may accept Him and eat all off of HIS table , or reject Him and not be permitted to go through HIS line . You see in True Cristianity , there is no " gray area " , it is black & white . You`re either a believer , or you`re not .With GOD`s Word you can`t pick and choose what you want ! GOD`s Word is final.. Basically it`s easy to follow the man based religion , and very , very hard to follow Christ . So ; it is man`s nature to take the easier of the two paths living for the world and sin , it is so easy..

It's a real mystery - especially given the absurdity of their beliefs - That joseph smith guy saying he'd been given golden tablets by an angel - and yet nobody else ever saw them. mmhm... What utter rubbish. I think a reason its so popular in America is because it makes Christianity American (and people in the states don't like thinking that there are other countries in the world) by saying, among other things that Jesus is going to reappear in Jacksonville, Missouri which is apparently also where the Garden of Eden.

Having said that, I don't think its much siller than mainstream christianity which is veridically worthless.

I don't know any Mormons who would tell their daughter she would "burn in hell" for not going to church. That's not even close to any doctrine we have. I'm sorry your fiancee had a bad experience growing up. It sounds like the parents have some serious repenting to do.

what his family did cannot account for every mormon. you can't make a generlization like that. not everyone is like his family. and to answer your question i think it has to do with were your born. I.E. if your born in the middle east you'd prob turn out to be Muslim.

Unfortunately for your friend, the people trying to live the religion are not perfect. BUT the gospel is perfect and will end with us as perfected beings if we follow it, endure and stay faithful.

The gospel is true.

I am sorry for what happened to your friend.

Not sure. The Bible says who is a friend of the world is an enemy with God.
