i dont have a dvd logo on my cd drive ,but is there another way to play dvd's by downloading a software from the internet.
i also wanted to know what a vlc media player is?

you have to have a DVD player to play DVD's and also software = windvd

DVD is played on the PC through DVD Reader , or now a days easily called as COMBO drive. Without the use of this drive we cannot access the DVD, Any software which u download from net, would not change the reading capacity of the Lens of the Cd Drive, SO, it is not possible to access DVDs without DVD Drive.

First, obviously you need a DVD drive of some kind. Second, a software player. I watch mine on my DVD player, but on occasion when I want to look at it on the PC I use Media Player Classic.

You can't play DVD's without a dvd decoder.
There are a few software decoders out on the 'net, but most are try/buy shareware.
vlc media player will play any format video, works well. still, if you have a DVD, it won't play it because there is no decoder to decode the dvd.
solution- dvd-r is cheap now. replace your burner with one and save yourself some headaches.

you mean you dont have a dvd logo on your cd drive. but find out if your cd drive has facility to read dvd.

you have to have a DVD ROM drive in your PC to play DVD's and also software like POWER DVD 6.0

You should have a dvd rom to play dvd on your pc. you can play it wih windows media player
