Anywhere you can get out of the city and away from light pollution. I grew up camping in BC Canada and that is all we did. But I have also been to Australia, and in the Southern Hemisphere you get a whole new set of stars. Yes, Alice Springs is on the top of my list.

I absolutely agree with the second answer you received - near or in the Grand Canyon! Having camped out on the canyon floor & witnessed the sky in total darkness - I never knew there were so many stars in the sky. There are (dude) ranches on the rim that turn off their generators at 10 PM & there are not city lights nearby that filter their light to mess up the view. It is magnaficient!

the best places in the world are desert with no clouds or light pollution ... the dry deserts of chile the atacama is where the best star gazing can be found and the outback of australia is unbelievable these can be reached within 2 days of santiago or from alice springs in australia but ifyou are in the usa then head to any of your deserts the death valley would be a good place to start

I hear the Northern Lights in Alaska are spectacular, probably the best gazing you can ever do.
