Well, I think this happens not just in America. When you get older, life gets busier and you don't have much time to do fitness. Or you often sit at the office, and not moving around much.

The nature of your question reveals that you are NOT an American. Where are you from? Probably from another country with another culture, probably with different food and different eating habits and working habits and other habits that you know nothing about.
The American culture is what it is. We have fast food restaurants on every corner, and a society that makes it impossible to be home for dinner, and so we eat what is available at the moment.
Yes, there are those wonderful people among us that eat 'right'; and they are to be commended. However, the normal population doesn't have time to worry about WHAT they eat, but only that they have time to shove a cheeseburger into their face on the way to pick up their kids from school.........
If you feel like you are in danger of getting fat, go back to your "skinny country" and stop complaining about the land that you chose to immigrate to in order to better your life!

1) Metabolism
2) Lack of exercise (with good reason).
Many countries still press physical labor, as 90 percent of the job market is flooded with that type of need. America, embraces intelligence over strength, and in doing so creates cubicle creatures (CC's). These men and women rarely get far from their cubicles and continually suck down whatever meal they can fit into their 20 second lunch break post commuting to and from the random food location. Couple that with longer work weeks than other countries (France: having a 20 hour work week). You get a society that works a lot thus does not have access to home cooked food (usually healthier) along with the added perk we aren't digging trenches in guam. :) Something along those lines.

I'm an american and I can say it. Americans are lazy.
We live in a fast food world and its doing wonders for our health.
Metabolism slows down and as people get older they keep eating the same junk.

Because we've been putting all those junk food in our bodies throughout our lives; so it will kick in at some point. Eat a healthy diet, the earlier you start, the better.

Because they are not as active as they once were, but continue to eat as if they were. Their bodies are not utilizing the energy given it by the nourishment therefore it is stored as FAT.
