Vodka, by defination is; ordorless, colorless and tastless, so why does cheep vodka tastes so bad? I have a home water distiller that could be easily used for re-distilling vodka to remove the nasty tasting impurities. Is there any danger in re-distilling vodka? specifically "methanol poisioning"?

No, there's no danger of methanol poisoning...it was all removed during the vodka producing process. However, for the time, energy, electricity, and equipment cost, it will be more practical to just buy the good stuff first.

Your distiller contains some plastic parts (the outlet tubing, etc.) so that the distillate pouring out will tend to leach out the solvents and plasticizers from them...ultimately ruining the water distiller (people have already tried) and actually making a worse liquor than the cheap vodka they were trying to improve.

A better idea (and cheaper and easier and quicker) is to try a "Gray Kangaroo"

(stupid sounding, but actually quite effective)
Or you could try the Brita pitcher method...pour the cheap crap through a Brita filter pitcher about 4 or 5 times.

I've heard that a brita filter can work wonders on cheap vodka.

I buy stoli or absolut or other mid priced vodkas. (I'm in Canada so the "Cheap" vodka is only a buck or two less than those brands - no $8"

Get some decent vodka, but don't be fooled by the really expensive ones. Expensive vodka is a joke. Vodka is one of the cheapest liquors to make - there is no storage, aging or blending involved, yet there are vodkas that cost more than 12 and 18 year old whiskies. Expensive vodkas are all about marketing, and having a designer bottle. The distillers have even admitted that the profit margin is massive on the high end vodkas. It's been proven that most people can't even tell the difference between the regular premium brands (smirnoff, stoli, etc.) and the top shelf ones.

The only good reason to re heat and distill cheap vodka is to double the proof, steam off the water, copper works and tastes better than stainless.
