In my experience a girl can say that when they think you are trying to get the better of them. For example. A guy tells his girlfriend, “You pay for dinner, and I’ll pay the bus fare.” She is likely to answer, “You are very smart.” It is just a nice way of saying you are very cunning. So depending on the occasion when she says it you will know what she means. If you solve some problem for her she may say it meaning you are clever. Having said that, more often than not they mean, “Don’t be smart.” Wishing you and your family, “A Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year.”
