I don't want to hurt them... I mean, setting up tape or something to see if someone is coming in.

The safest way is to lightly sprinkle baby powder on the floor as you are standing outside your door . Sprinkle it over the entry way area where they would step into your apartment. Make it inconspicuos, lightly sprinkle enough to see foot prints but not enough to make it obvious. If someone was there you will see smears or foot prints. The other way is to place a clear piece of scotch tape at the bottom of the door lay it over the door jam and the actual door, so if the door opens the tape will come undone and you know someone came in. As long as you lace it at foot level and press it down to make it real clear, it should be unoticeable.

If you want to just check if someone has been entering, the hair on the doorframe is an old spy trick.
If you want to spend a LITTLE money, get some tracking dust and a blacklight to make it visible.
If you want to spend MORE money, set up a motion detect camera that will take pictures. If you REALLY want to invest, set up a video surveillance system just like the stores and casinos use.
If you want to STOP the person permanently, wire a shotgun to the door. It's cheaper than a claymore...
If you want to go EXOTIC, wire the stereo and SUB to broadcast an ultra low tone that will knock the perp out. You can collect the perp at anytime.

On your way out the door, place a piece of scotch tape on the top of the door across the crack. Put a small cut in one side so if it comes under stress, it will cause it to tear. When you come home, see if your door was opened.

when you leave. stick a small piece of hard pretzel or cracker in between the door and the frame on the hinge side. when someone opens the door the space between the door and frame will close thereby crushing the cracker into pieces. make sure its wedged fairly tight and make it inconspicus. If they discover it the first time they will be very careful from then on.

Tape in an inconspicuous place would be a good thing.
Changing the locks would be better.
And whatever you do; do NOT use the shotgun technique! If someone opened the door and was killed, you would be charged with murder.

Put a hair across the bottom of your door frame. Before you enter your apartment look to see if it is broken.

Buy a monitor camera. They make hunting types that snap a shot if there is movement. Get a pic and tell the police. It's illegal to booby trap. If they get in your home they can press charges and sue...

lean a toothpick against the bottom of the door. if someone is coming in the mtoothpick will be knocked over.

I would have the locks rekeyed, if they are good locks, or have better ones installed, instead of booby trapping you door. You are liable to hurt innocent people, as well as yourself by doing this.
