i had the same thing happen to me....and i am so glad i kept my dogs because the owners were a family who let the dogs run wild with out being watched. some of their previous pets had been hit my cars or had run away.

it seems like they chose you, if you love them and can provide for them...then keep em'

I am also a Basset Hound lover, and breeder. So sorry to hear about your girl getting hit, I would be heart broken if one of mine was lost or injured. So, have you thought that perhaps the skinny, scraped up dashound might have also been hit by a car and not abused, and that it could be skinny from a number of different medical problems not caused from neglect and that his owners could have medication that he desperately needs, and that they are probly sick with worry not knowing if their little baby's are hurt in the street somewhere like yours was! Get them to the SPCA so they can find their owner! Think about it, if someone is a cruel abusive pet owner then they wouldn't feed the other pet either, and these are not cheap dogs, if someone has invested the money to buy a good pure breed dog, the odds are that they will take good care of it. Keeping these dogs is the same as stealing them, you are the cruel one if you don't help their owner have a chance to find them. The owner will for sure be checking the SPCA trying to find them, the SPCA will scan them to see if they are microchipped, and they would also be able to determine if the dog looks abused, and if it was then they could have the owner arrested for it, and find a better owner, they could even give them back to you if no owner was found, not to mention that they will get their vet to check them out and it wont cost you anything.

I agree with the first answer .Your not qualified to pass a
judgement on someone you don't even know and that's
if such people or persons exist. Most people try and stick with their common sense if they are lucky enough to have any.
(humor) No one might simply understand a condition of
one of a pair of dogs found loose and roaming one healthy and
the other which appears as starved. The sickly looking dog can have an terminal illness or genetic disorder. These are far
more common then you think given the estimated population of
dog's and interbreeding. You cannot pick a child up lost on the street and decide for yourself it has been abused or neglected.
Then decide to keep it no questions asked.
It is not much different for a pet I would suppose ideally.
Someone out there could be wishing feefee and toto would return
home as far as you know.I would drop them off at the shelter
also. They are equped to deal with such matters supposedly with
an open mind.A detemined pet owner who has access to
a telephone may know this and is the first place misssing informed pet owners should look or would would look in their area. The best thing you can do for the dogs now is take them there to one that is in the area where
you found them.(hopefully the neighborhood juristiction from
an area where they came from.)These places will give you
the option of possibly adopting the creatures if no on e
claims guardianship of them within a time period. Some states
vary in the waiting period...Okay..? Maybe you may have two
adorable dogs on your shoulders eventually or
you will have the happiness in knowing they are some ones loved pets and have been taken well care of and abuse was not determined as any leading factor and they are wanted back.
AThere are many, many abandon ,abusedand neglected pets in a shelter waiting for some one like you to adopt them.
Many will be so called "humanely euthinised ""Put in gas chamber) Simply because no one claimed them so they have not got a loving home. Atleast gives the "dogs" the benefit of the chance they do and maybe miss their masters.Keep
up with the progress ,they're health will be checked out for
anything contagious or threatening and what ever the basics
are for worrying about.Plus they have the option of being found by their "families" Not all people view petr ownership as dogs
the same way.Certain dogs were simply bred for certain
behaviors and purposes. Some people may think they have to buy their dog (exageration)a gold and diamond studded collar
and let them share the toilet or eat raw ground beef. For
others maybe a sturdy dog house in rain sleet or snow will
do just fine and a ways hasYou have a Merry Christmas!

Ok, to start with you shouldn't be making assumptions on how well these dogs were looked after, they could have been let out of their property and have been lost for quite some time.

What you're doing is illegal, you're not allowed to keep a lost dog on your property, you must take it to a pound so it can be processed so it can find its' owners, you can always adopt the dogs if the owners do not come forward.

Imagine how you would feel if your dogs got out and sometime just kept them and you didn't see the poster someone put up because you probably live many suburbs away from where the dogs were found.

well i would suggest that you take both dogs to the vet and have both of them checked out,,,and if you can provide a good home for them and can give them the love and attention they deserve then by all means keep them,,, but if there is signs posted which like you said i dought there will be but if there is then i would respond to it and ask some serious questions of how long the dogs have been gone and their living situations cause they may have been abuse but then they may just be lost also,,, cause if my dogs was lost and i posted signs i would want someone that found them to respond to my signs cause i love my dogs and im sure you loved your beloved bassett hound that just passed away which im so sorry hear about and you would want someone to respond to your signs,,, also one more thing when you take the dogs to the vet you can ask he if he thinks they have been abuse or negleted then when you do respond to the signs if there ever is any then tell them that you have already reported them to the authorties then im sure they will let you have the dogs if they were abusing the dogs cause they wont want to be charged with animal abuse,,, I hope this has helped and have fun with your new little furry friends and i hope for you that they were dumped and you get to keep them cause dogs are so great to have,,,,, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

I would also take them to the humane society and just have them checked out. They could have escaped from home a few days ago which would explain why the one is so skinny and beat up. The shelter will be able to tell you if they have microchips implanted. But whatever you do, don't just give them to the shelter or the owners. Let the shelter know and allow them to figure out what is going on- you don't want to get in trouble. Good luck!

You are soooo nice... :-) I wouldn't answer any ads. If they cared for the dogs at all, they wouldn't have been at your house. But then again, they could have gotten out of their fence and wondered off, and was just lucky not to get hit on the road. Sorry bout your dog... :-(
That kind-of a touchy situation.
Good Luck...I am sure you will figure it out.
If they take the time to put up posters or run an ad in the paper, then they must care..right?

I love dauschunds... I have a standard long hair, he is a big dog... not the small short hairs..

possibly they have been on the run for awhile and the owners are looking... they are kind of skittish and stupid dogs.. great nose but low on the I.Q scale if you know what I mean...

If you do find the owners, possibly call from a pay phone and find out how long they have been on the run and why the one is skin and bones..

good luck...

That's awful. My friend's dog escaped when their house burnt down, and someone found him all boney and starving a few months later and returned him to his owners. They were so glad to get him back. How dare you pass judgement like that? Maybe the "boney" one has an illness or something. You don't know this dog, you don't know it's needs, and you don't know where it came from. You have no place keeping these dogs.

You can file a complaint with your local ASPCA about your suspected abuse of the "boney" one. However, that will put the dogs at risk of being reclaimed by their owner, if the owner is really trying to find the dogs. I think I would just pretend I did not see any lost dog signs. I hope you consider yourself an angel for caring for these abandoned or abused dogs. I'm sure the dogs will think that about you, and be glad they found you!!
