First, are you sure its not fleas? Honestly, the best results are gonna be with a veterinary prescribed product like Frontline or Advantage, but if your broke you can try Pert shampoo, some say that works, but you'll need to flea bomb the house too or they'll just come back. If its not fleas, and you see circular bald lesions then it may be mange, which can be transmittable to humans. That you will definitely need to see your vet to have treated.

Back brush the fur very slowly and look for dirt specs or moving objects. Fleas these days laugh at flea collars. Most of us have gone to topical spot ons. Some like Fontline . I use an otc called Bio Spot. I've used it for over ten yrs on all my dogs and on all the rescuses that I've had.
If you don't have fleas, then it could be diet related. What is the fat content of your dogfood? Cheap brands do not usually have enough and this can cause dry skin. My food, which is a little high in fat, is 23% fat. Read your label.
Too much bathing can cause dry skin. Don't bath more than once a month.

Lots of good answers here. If your dog is over 6 months, get Frontline for fleas and ticks. Food allergies is also a good answer. Slowly try different food to see what happens. Many dogs are allergic to wheat products. Hot spots, well that's mostly nerves and I don't have an answer to that. Mites are mostly in the ears, and a very small amount of mineral oil put in their ears will suffocate the mites. An other cause, which was not mentioned is yeast. If your dog has floppy ears, or there is alot of black dirt like substance in her ears, it could be yeast, which will also spread throughout the skin, and cause a lot of itching and scratching. There are ear drops available at most pet stores to keep the ears clean. My dog also had it in her skin and my vet recommended Selsun Blue Medicated Shampoo. It really helped alot. She also gave me drops, but there was absolutely no way I could get them in her ears! My vet also recommended Benedryl. I don't know what size your dog is, but mine weighs about 18-20 lbs, and I would give her 1 Childs Benedryl. I am not a vet, so if you use the Benedryl, use it sparingly. Too much may make your dog really sick or die. Even if you can't afford to go to a vet, try calling one and see if they can at least recommend something to help with the itching. Then when you can afford to take her, take her as soon as you can to find out exactly what it is. Good luck

It might be mites. If she has dandruff along with all that itching this could be the cause. Mine had them when I first brought her home. If this is the case go to the vet and just buy the flea shampoo. It was I think 8 or 10 dollars. Wash the pup. Leave it on for 10 mins and do this every week for 4 weeks. It solved my problem. I think though you should take her to the vet. Imagine how uncomfortable it must be. Itching until you bleed.

Fish oil works wonders but has to be given by weight so get her to the vets and weigh her. Then ask for the appropriate dosage. The flea collar might not be working so my advice is to buy some flea drops from the vet or go to DrsFosterSmith.com and order it.
It may be that your dog just has dry skin and all the bathing and brushing is irritating it further. If this is the case the fish oil should help.
You could also try putting a tablespoon of olive oil on her food daily.

If it doesn't have fleas/ticks, it may have mange. There are meds available over the counter at pet and feed stores.
This is only if the dog has no collie in it, and is at least six months old:
"The cure is simply this. Buy a bottle of "injectable bovine ivermectin one percent solution" and give one quarter cc per twenty pounds of body weight BY MOUTH everyday for 28 days in a row. Just draw up the calculated dosage in a 1cc syringe, remove the needle and squirt it in their mouth. They hate the taste but IT WORKS. I DO NOT give this to puppies under six months old. Take what is left of the bottle and use it as heartworm protection by giving it once every thirty days in the same dosage mentioned above. It will kill just about everything except tape worms. Ivermectin can be purchased at just about any farm co-op."
You need to buy a syringe and needle as well to use this.
I did this with my dog, and it worked to get rid of advanced mange. You shouldn't squirt it in the dogs mouth, though. You should mix it with a tiny bit of wet food, or squirt it on a piece of bread. NEVER NEVER inject it into the dog. The dog will get a sore and swelling at the injection site if you do. Oral is best.

Stop bathing her~especially if you are using chemicals (soap/shampoo)~it only drys the skin more. Fleas?
It sounds like she has allergies~try changing her diet & see if there is a local Pet Lifeline or Adopt A Pet resource. They might be able to assist you w/a remedy. I have a Dalmation and a Lab, who both have seasonal allergys. Besides medication, my vet has suggested Benedryl (which doesn't help you because of the $ issue.) I hope you are able to ease her a bit...Good luck to you both~I will look for a website in hopes to assist.

My parents have a dog that does the same thing. They had the vet examine their dog and found that it was a "hot spot". It is a nervous disorder and the vet prescribed anti-biotic.
You may also want to check for ring worm. It is lesions under the skin and is highly contagious between pets and can be transmitted to humans.

It could be fleas. Or maybe she just has dry skin. They make a conditioned shampoo for dogs and its pretty cheap. Try that and if she still itches, see the vet.

Sounds like she has fleas... you need to comb her using a flea comb, a brush doesn't help at all...calamine lotion should ease the itch..
