I think it is just a shorthand way of saying "christian."

The X is used to replace the Christ in the word Christian - thereby keeping alive, while living in hiding, a follower of Christ.
The X represents the cross Jesus died on for our sins. (As the letter T does not have the upper part of the cross.)

It is short hand for Christian, today.
