I think that there is more religion that most would believe but good Christians - usiing that for an example since it is our primary religion - are too busy helping others and trying to live good lives to make the news and we read only the bad news and not the good. Who heard about the 7 year old who saved his mother's life? Or who heard about the fact that the Denver First Colloboration saved their city some $30,000 by providing the homeless with stable housing and comprehensive social services? Good news does not sell papers so we don't hear of it often.
This countries deterioration is due to many factors and one can not pin point a single cause. Our schools are overcrowded and understaffed and while good teachers are hampered often by this, bad teachers can not be fired because of teachers unions. one school in my area can not get books for the students and yet another 20 miles away has a million dollar sports stadium.
Our politicians are often for sale to the highest bidder and no longer responsive to the needs of their communities. one example, the Snake river dam in Washington State has scientists, ecologists, and the general population calling for removal of several of the dams but the fight has gone on for some 20 years now with no action other than good money being thrown out to beautify the surrounding area.
we have a president with the losest approval rating in the history of this country who has lied to the people several times and when it comes to adjusted real income, medical care, and education, we are 7th behind 6 constitutional monarchies according to the last human inces report issued.
Our lack of intelligence is because too many people have given up - a book has just been released to tell retirees which foreign country would be the best to move to when they leave the U.S. - and until we provide motivation to the people of this country to vote out the reasons for the deterioration we are going to get worse before we get any better.
Certainly, religious fanatiscism is not good for the country but neither is blind patriotism to a system which badly needs repair!

The news media hides the 100 million victims of killing in the name of God.. It's there job along with the religions to opiate the masses. That's why in many 3rd World countries one religion is allowed to share equal power with government. The religions have a grip on the minds of people and encourage the followers to ignore the genocide that it has caused. In return the religions promise a reward after you are dead (providing that you put something in the collection basket).

The United States is unique among wealthy democracies in its level of religious literalism and opposition to evolutionary theory; it is also uniquely beleaguered by high rates of homicide, abortion, teen pregnancy, STD infection and infant mortality. The same comparison holds true within the United States itself: Southern and Midwestern states, characterized by the highest levels of religious superstition and hostility to evolutionary theory, are especially plagued by the above indicators of societal dysfunction, while the comparatively secular states of the Northeast conform to European norms. Of course, correlational data of this sort do not resolve questions of causality--belief in God may lead to societal dysfunction; societal dysfunction may foster a belief in God; each factor may enable the other; or both may spring from some deeper source of mischief. Leaving aside the issue of cause and effect, these facts prove that atheism is perfectly compatible with the basic aspirations of a civil society; they also prove, conclusively, that religious faith does nothing to ensure a society’s health.

And I'm not talking a Gestapo state but a place where we walk by the Spirit of God.You can not legislate morality.

Religion is a huge problem. Wars are fought about it, countries fight each other over it, people were/are killed because they don't believe in something the other does. Crazy people killing their kids, they claim "God told me to do it..." and they make it almost seem likes it's ok...when really the person is just fu ck ed in the head.
I agree that without religion the world would be a much better place.

religion isn't bad in itself. its the intolerant and ignorant that twist the good of religion into a dark and evil thing. People often use religion to propel ther own agendas of hate, and intoleranrce. it is safe to say that Most christians are not fanatical. only a small minority r.

Anecdotal stories presented by a biased media do not constitute any sort of statistical facts worthy of assessing societal trends.
