Yes... it is a very unhealthy way of trying to cope with their problems. Reasons people cut are:
To feel alive.
To stop feeling something emotional so intensely.
To feel in control.
It is "bad" because people do accidentally go too far and it leaves scars they will be very sorry for later.

It's not necesarily a BAD thing, more way unhealthy. As others have said. It's an invitation for bacteria to come in and cause an infection. You could go too deep and cut open an artery. And the scars are horrible too. I cut myself not too long ago actually...I am making a huge effort to stop, I knew all these risks too. I did it for various reasons, to punish myself, to feel like I was alive, to feel something on the outside instead of on the inside etc.
If you or anyone you know cuts themselves. Tell someone, a guidance counselor for example. I talked to mine, and she didn't call my parents until I had to tell her that I had attempted suicide (obviously a very LAME attempt (I had tried to strangle myself to death) but an attempt is an attempt). And still, she didn't tell my mom anything really in detail, she just suggested counseling. And I got my help.
If it's a friend, just be there for them, make them feel like people do care about them. If it's you, imagine what might go through your mind if you found out that a close friend did that, put yourself in their shoes.
I really hope this helps and I am here if you need to talk...you can email me at pokekait@yahoo.com or pokekait@earthlink.net

Yes and no. Cutting is a coping mechanism. It can help a person in several instances. It could be help anxiety, anger, depression, boredom, even sexual gratification. If this is changing the way you are feeling, ex: from a depressed mood to a relieved mood, then yes. But, here comes the no. It can become an addiction. Not an addiction to the razor it's self, but to the adrenaline that is caused by forcing harm on yourself. That was the psychological aspect. The phsyical aspect is that, it can cause extreme bloodloss, keloid scars and even shock... In all physical veiws, self injury can not be condoled as a good 'thing'. In one psychological veiw yes, because you are using something to occupy your time time, so you don't dwell on your feelings. The other psychological view is that no, it can not be condoled because, it's an addictive behaviour. Good Luck I hope I helped ya some.

Cutting can be harmful unless u take it too far and start telling ppl. I know too many ppl including myself who has hurt themselves and others bcuz of this. My mom sent me to North Key for a while when she saw scars Im not there anymore but im STILL recovering bcuz its a very addicting habbit. Ive also had a best friend almost die bcuz of it. Ppl cut for VERY good reasons: its a way too express themselves without having to tell someone about it and it sometimes makes thm feel better about themselves. I know it would be better if they told someone about it but sometimes ppl cant so they take it out on themselves.

It's a very bad thing. It can lead to infections and intense bleeding. Imagine if they cut a major vein or an artery. The scars that are left over are horrible, too.

its a bad thing. its not good especially if they are that depressed to be doing it in the first place. i have a friend who was really depressed a year ago and she cut and now she's fine and doesn't do it anymore. but, just try to help make your friends happier. they might not have a reason to cut anymore if they become happier. maybe you could help them believe in something or just get involved in stuff that would take their minds off the bad things. pray for them.

yes. coming from a person with experience with it... it is definately bad. it only makes things worse and everyone always worries about you and the longer it goes on and the worse it gets the easier it will be to accidentally die or really end up hurting yourself without realizing it and the harder it will be to stop.

yes cutting is an bad thing, it may not hurt when your to depressed to feel it but after the fact it will, and it will leave scar's for life, and hurt you(in general) just because you(in general) actually harmed your body.

well, I think that it's obviously not a healthy mental place...but medically it is also unhealthy. When you open up your skin you are creating spaces that bacteria and other junk can get into your system. If you should pick up a REALLY bad infection it could cost you your life.
