can I stop being so shy when I first meet someone and how can I be more outgoing and start the conversation, I'm just really afraid that they will think I'm a freak for talking to them.

Find a common ground. Music, food, dancing, clubs, whatever.
Put your hand out, shake hands and introduce yourself. (yes even with women...) Theres no need to BE shy. People are people, they either like you for you, or they don't. (my husbands shy...weird...because I'm not, so I sorta help him out. When we meet people. I speak first...maybe you can find a friend who'll help you that way.)
You've talked to me now...so you aren't that shy... ;D

I am the same way, When walking into store, school, or just down the side walk. smile to the first person you see and say hello, how are you doing. it isn't easy everyday i try and do with at least one person. With my job i work with the public, i listen to people and say very little back. it is something that my boss says that i have to speak to more people and open up more.
it isn't easy, I'm still working on it.

I used to be alot like that. I think as you get older, you kind of grow out of that. But just join in the conversation anyone is having. The more you and them say, the easier it will be.

just be yourself. who cares what they think of you, all that matters is how you feel about yourself.
