I thought it was because we have a soul. However, it was clearly judged on Star Trek: The Next Generation that the character, Data, is a sentient being. Just ask Captain Picard ! Good Luck! :)

If this is not so, then where did the question come from?
You are a being that can sense things.
If this is not so, how is it that you are using a computer?
The state of being able to sense things is called 'sentient'.
Thus, you are a sentient being.
So am I.
We are sentient beings.

Yes. If you do not have any senses or consciousness, you are not a sentient being.

Becdasue we are self aware. We know we exist, we understand what existance is and we are aware of how that existance affects others. We are able to communicate ideas both simple and complex to one another and are able to manipulate and control the world around us.
