With increases in productivity (less of a need for physical exertion than in the past), better nutritional habits, better living conditions and other general improvements in quality of life, does the human body need less sleep to function optimally than it once needed?

I doubt it. The function of sleep (probably) is to rejuvenate the brain cells. The demands on our brains have changed very little. If the forces you mention made changes in the amount of sleep we need, then we'd see differences in sleep need among the various cultures in the current world. As far as I know, there are no such differences.

Excellent question, though.

I don't think so. Sleep is mainly needed by the brain and not so much by the muscles. The amount of sleep you need depends on your age though. The older you are the less sleep you need. If you only need 3 - 4 hours of sleep a day and are younger then 50 something is wrong and you should see a doctor. Lack of sleep can cause health problems even if you feel fine. BTW. Do NOT try to solve sleep problems with sleeping pills. They usually do more harm then good. Taken over a long period of time they can cause massive health problems/brain damage etc.

I doubt it, just the amount has changed...due to our fast paced, un natural, garbage filled lives we now lead. Well most of you lead.
