There is no need for Russia to join the EU. Russia has no benefit out of it.

Russia will not join the EU for the simple reason that long before anybody would consider them a candidate, the EU will be a historical failure.

The European peoples could handle a common market (isn't that where it started?) but political union in the near future is a dream. The politicians have advanced the idea for whatever their idological reasons have been. But, confronted with the reality of what it would mean, the French and the Dutch have said "No thank you" already, and if the Danes had been given the chance, they would have done the same thing. The British, who have never been politcal fools (except for a minority in the Labor Party) have always been suspicious (with good reason) of it.

And then, the complete folly of admiting about 10 more countries will be the final destruction of "the community" which was never a community except in geographical terms..

The Eastern European countries have embraced the idea of the EU because any form of union would protect them from the "Soviet Union" and bind them to the West and its protection.

All of that is not the cement to build a true alliance on. Turkey's desire to join is nothing but a dream, based on what is happening today. The whole alliance is worried about illegal immigration (which is much more dangerous and destabilizing that the Mexican illegal immigration into the US).

So, given all of that do you really think Russia will ever want or be eligible to join the EU?

It seems to me, personally speaking, that the EU has a death wish which will be realized before too much time passes.

Let's hope "Mother Russia" is willing to join the EU. They'll probably join when they feel like it... The only problem is that Russia is both part of Asia and Europe, but that didn't stop Turkey...

Only if China threatens Russia's Siberian east, then Russia will seek the shelter of the EU and even NATO. In return, Russia would play ball with the west (and be no more difficult than France).

Russia's going to go totalitarian in the next 5-10 years, maybe faster if Putin has his way. The EU is going to be a bloody mess soon enough ;P

it may in no way happen. consistent with danger sometime russia could connect the ecu and turkey and all of europe (achievable yet impossible) yet noone else. the international could be a greater useful place yet probably the ecu could desintegrate first XD
