She is 37 and was married once before... We've been dating for 6 months, but she is not that close with him. He lives 2 hours away and I haven't met him yet.

One more thing I should add... We're supposed to go to his house so I can meet him in 2 weeks from now, but I really wanted to give her the ring on Christmas...

It is not a requirement that you ask her father for permission...it sounds like you should be giving the relationship a little more time, though. Since she was married before and you've only been dating for 6 months, this Christmas might not be the right time...maybe next Christmas?? Give the relationship some time.

If she's 37 and has been married before, I'd say it's not necessary. However, I think it would be nice to call him and let him know. Or give her the ring now and then pull him aside when you meet him and get his permission then.

If you still want to propose on Christmas, go ahead. When you meet her father, take him aside and still ask for his blessing (rather than his permission.) You could say something like "I've asked Jane to marry me and she's accepted. Before we proceed with planning, I wanted your blessing/permission to marry her." Then state the reasons why you love her, how you'll care for her, and indicate that it is important to you to have his okay.

No it is not necessary to ask for his permission to marry his daughter.

1. That is an old custom and unnecessary in today's day and age.
2. This would be her second marriage, she has already been given away.

Only if she's a woman who is completely dependant on men with no rights of her own. You know, sort of like property. That's how the tradition started anyways. Personally, I'd be offended if my lover asked my dad before we agreed on the whole marriage thing.

well, seeing as i lived both in the middle east and USA, i know they both have diff traditions. like in the west u just get down on ur knees and ask the girl to marry u, but in the middle east u have to get the approval of the parents.. I say, u shud get to meet her father to get closer to the family. Even though its not traditional, her father will still appreciate and respect u asking him to marry his daughter and will be delighted abt it. good luck
