Not so much different license as different certifications in type and class...my recommendation, don't fly a plane unless thats what you going to keep flying, if you want to be a helo pilot jump right in to a Chopper, in a plane you will develop habits that would kill you in a helicopter

Different countries have different regulations but for the most part they all follow the same rules.
Here in my country you do need an R (rotary) endorsement on your licence. This is done by attending a recognized Helicopter Training Facility. Don't forget that there is much more to operating a Helo than there is for fixed wing a/c.

In the US, you need an Airman's Certificate. It is not a license -- that is an a different animal in legal terms.
Once you have an Airman's Certificate, you need only to accumulate a certain amount of hours on each kind of aircraft, successfully complete the ground school, and pass FAA written and check flights for each kind of aircraft you wish to fly. The type of aircraft will then be listed on the back of your Certificate along with any restrictions.
The requirements for each classification of aircraft are listed in the FARS, a rather large book that is available in many bookstores or on the net from the FAA's website. Happy flying!

Yes their are separate licenses for Helos and planes their are even separate licenses for different types of planes ex;single engine or multi engine prop or jet visual flying or instrument flying. The same goes for helos. Plus their are civil and commercial licenses too.

No
pa28_180f...has the best answer.
You don't need a separate license. You have one license, Private, Commercial and ATP. You add RATINGS to one of those licenses.
ie: single engine,multi-engine, land, sea, rotorcraft, lighter than air, etc
Anything 10,500 lbs or over needs a seperate rating for each aircraft over that weight.
xphxpd is wrong, you don't NEED to start with a single engine rating. (it is the cheapest way) but I have known people who have a Multi-engine rating ONLY.

Same reason in some states you need a endorsement on your license to drive both a car and a motorcycle.
Different birds, how the controls work, etc.

no they are the same lecenses but different endorsement if you have one you can get the other one pretty easy. the licenses require alot of the same things such as at least 40hrs of flight time, a current 3rd class medical, and pass the written exam. i have both and the fixed wing is alot easier than rotorwing

Same pilot license, different ratings. Once you get a private pilot license, you just add ratings for different aircraft.
Just like your drivers license, endorsements are added.
