i have a recipe that calls for gruyere cheese. can i substitute swiss cheese?

They do taste a bit different but it won't be the end of the world. You can take equal parts Swiss and Jarlsberg and that will be pretty close.

Monterey Jack has the same consistency, but does not taste like swiss. It is much milder.

no they are different tastes, textures and melting consistencies
