No its free to stand there in the freezing cold with the thousands of people & the pick pocketers.

Tickets aren't required - it's a public event. If you or a friend decide to go, though, you'll have to get there extremely early - most likely sometime in the evening the night before. So many people go that if you were to show up later, you would end up on a side street and probably wouldn't be able to see the ball.

nope. but you'd best get there early before it gets extremely packed and they close that particular subway stop. or else you'll have to walk a couple blocks and work your way through the crowd.
