Why is alcohol legal but not weed?

I totally agree. I have often pondered this question, as I live in Northern California and weed is basically legal where I live. People are so much more at risk of harming themselves and others when drinking than being high. Alcohol causes so many deaths every year involving everything from driving to domestic violence to public violence to suicide to accidental O.D. It's insane! If you were to take the numbers of alcohol related deaths and put them next to marijuana related ones, the difference would be huge, but would it really be THAT shocking? When your high, the last thing you want to do is fight! You just want to eat and/or chill. I could go on and on, but I won't. All I'm gonna say is GOOD QUESTION and I wish that more people would really seriously consider this thought.

the only reason weed isnt legal is because the government hasnt come up with a way to tax it and make money off it! i totally agree...gettin high is no different than getting drunk.....if i was on the road id rather meet a vehicle with someone high driving than someone drunk....at least the dude thats stoned will be drivin slow!

Funny, but I learned this in Fashion Design 101. The reason weed is illegal is because of the farmers who raised cotton. In order to protect their product from losing profit and popularity, they associated hemp with weed. Then they worked to make weed illegal, hence, making it hard for the farmers of hemp to grow their crops since the two plants look much alike. In actuality, hemp is a much stronger material than cotton. Not to encourage the use of weed, as I have never smoked, nor plan to ever try it.
Also, they did make alcohol illegal once, but it lead to much more trouble than it was worth. People were going blind and dying from drinking wood alcohol. Also, it made the crime rate sky rocket as mobsters made it a big business to get the illegal drink to the masses.

because everybody and their brother can put a seed in the ground and get something to grow, not everyone can set up a still and make alcohol........ also the government has not figured out how to tax it,, but soon as they figure that out it will be legal in 10 to 20 years.. by the way the government has marijuana grow farms in the USA, i know this for a fact i was in the military for 16 years and i have been to these farms......

I agree whole heartedly(sp) I prefer a bowl, over a beer, anyday..Honestly how many times have you heard of a High driver hitting someone and killing them, compared to a drunk driver..a helluva a lot more huh..I think its because when some people are high, they're all paranoid and driving really well..at least I know I drive well high.

Beats me. Cops can't handle two at the same time, but they can handle driving home after parties at three times the legal limit and then get a promotion the next day.

The distillers have a better lobby and more money. THe tobacco industry is also working against legalized weed. It would cut into their profit.

good question, way more people get killed or injured after getting drunk than after smoking weed. I have yet to figure it out.
