If you are depressed, almost positive that you are, and have all the symptoms but at the moment you are not completely sad or thinking bad thoughts, does that mean that you aren't depressed and are just making things up?

Registered Nurse here, one does not have to be depressed constantly in order to suffer depression. Nor does one have to be thinking bad thoughts or sad in order to be depressed. Many times, in fact majority of times the individual lacks motivation. Just to depressed to become interested in things, and lose interest in activities that use to be a happy time for them. Depression is a mental illness that millions suffer from. Usually if one is lying about symptoms, they have some other disorder rather than depression. People with depression are just to depressed to make up lies, and need help, support, and treatment. In today's world, I sometimes wonder if people who never suffer depression actually understand all the demands of the 21st century. Thanks for the opportunity to address your question.

To be diagnosed as depressed, you have to feel depressed most of the time for a certain length of time, but not all the time. Most people who are depressed don't feel that way 100% of the time. You could be depressed if you feel bad most of the time, even if right now you're ok, or even happy.

Depression doesn't necessarily mean that you feel "sad," exactly. At least, not the kind of sad that you might feel when your favorite hamster dies or your boyfriend is leaving for the summer. It's more that things don't make you happy anymore, and you might feel like you'll never be happy again. People who are depressed tend to give up activities or hobbies they used to enjoy, and isolate themselves from friends and family, because doing things they used to enjoy or spending time with people they care about doesn't bring pleasure anymore.

You don't necessarily have "bad thoughts" if you're depressed. Sometimes people who are depressed feel like life is so devoid of happiness that the only way out is to hurt themselves, but not always. People may not have bad thoughts all of the time, or even any of the time, but may still be depressed.

As I have learned, you do not have to be constantly depressed to be suffering from depression. You may not be as interested in things that you used to enjoy. You may or may not be sleeping enough, or sleeping too much, same with eating, may not eat enough, or too much. Gain or lose weight. Grades at school dropping or are dramatically different. If you are worried about it, go talk to someone, if you don't feel comfortable talking to your parents (I'm definately not), then go to a guidance counselor at school (that's what I did, but then it got to the point where she was required by law to call my mom, and now I am getting help.) It's nothing to be ashamed of, and I've come to terms with it now. I also know that it tends to run in families, I had a great uncle, and my mom's half brother commit suicide, and my mom is bipolar and loads of depression and such on my mom's side of the family. So I'm not completely alone....I just can't talk about it

People are complex... and that makes a common explanation difficult. Most people, from what I've read, exhibit signs of depression at some point... and even those who could be clinically diagnosed often times manage quite well. So its hard to say. Your interest and attention to your condition most likely mean you can and will deal perfectly well with your emotional ups and downs... but if in doubt, see a professional. In any case, I doubt you are making anything up.

I would go to your doctor and talk to him or her. That way, he or she can refer you to a therapist and he or she can prescribe you medication.

I know what you mean. Even though you are depressed, you can have good times. It could also mean that you are bipolar, but that is usually like a weekly thing. I would defintely see your doctor though.
