I know I will sound ungratefull when people read this, but I am in my 30's and EVERY Christmass my family buys me clothes and every Christmass I am happy but I cant stand receiving them as gifts, so I tell everyone PLEASE, NO CLOTHES !!!! (yes, my clothes are fine). I just found out people have bought me clothes again and I know I should be happy to receive anything but it gets me angry to be honest that while I take time to get people I love something I think they will like, they in return get me something they know I cant stand receiving. (Honestly I would rather have them donate the money to people who need it than receive something I will never wear). The issue comes down to that I feel like why would someone I care for buy me something they know I hate ? Seriously, I love my family, but if I knew my girlfriend or parents hated candles or something, I certianly wouldnt buy them any !! Is there any way to deal with this, or just be happy and give them to charity ?

have you ever sat down and had a heart to heart talk with them and told them to give you a gift certificate and let you buy your own clothes?i would be loving and kind and just tell them how you feel so you can put this thing to rest and have peace at christmas time.

Next year try writing a list of things you need or want and post it in an area where it's well seen. And you can say something like "Mom, I need a new amp for my guitar" maybe that "need" will get it across that you need that amp more than you need a sweater. My husband needs musical upgrades all of the time and never gets them as gifts because he never asks nor does he drop hints. If this makes you feel better, my mother in law went to hot topic and bought me a small table top black christmas tree with skull and crossbones ornaments. I'm a hippy- not a goth or a punk. LOL.

I totally know how you feel. My adult son & his wife buy me long sleeved T-Shirts as gifts all of the time. To make matters worse I absolutely hate shirts with logos, or other cutesypie artwork on them, & only wear them to do messy projects around the house, like painting. I have in the past tried to make my preferrences known, but I still end up with the same crap.
They don't even seem to notice that they never see any of the gifts they get me once I have opened them.

I used to get all upset about it (in private) but I have learned that it changes nothing, so I simply try to set an example for them & do as you do by putting some thought into the gifts I buy for them. I don't think I could bring myself to do it any other way, & I bet you couldn't either.

I kind of have myself to blame in a way, because I really can't think of anything that I DO WANT as gifts from them. So when they ask me what I want, I can't give them a meaningfull answer anyway. I have learned to find some solace in that. Since I really didn't ask for anything, then effectively getting nothing from them isn't so very disappointing.

Maybe the both of us could try telling our families exactly what we DO WANT, instead of the things that we DON"T WANT. Perhaps that would be an easier way of getting their attention for once.
Merry Christmas.

Maybe they give you clothes because "They" don't like what you wear.
You can always take the clothes back to the stores and get the money and buy yourself something that you need or want..
If you never wear what they buy you, then they will never know the difference.
And if they do notice that you got something different and they ask you who gave it to you just smile and say "Santa".
