So far as I'm concerned, there is no better word-processing software than Word. I have worked for three institutions over the last 15 years and each uses the MS Office package. It is the most widely used on the planet and for good reason. It is great.
To purchase, I would suggest you go to www.bizrate.com and run a search. You will get a list of sellers listed by price. Just be sure to get the CD and product key or you will not be allowed to update.

I don't know if it's better or not - that's a matter of opinion, I think, but there is a FREE alternative to MS Word - OpenOffice 2.0 (www.openoffice.org, I believe, is the web site. I have OpenOffice in my computer as well as MS Word, but I use OpenOffice more often than Word because it's simplified - doesn't have all the unnecessary buttons that you would rarely use, if at all. i don't know if it's better but OPENOFFICE.ORG is a free word processing program that is highly recommended by a lot of software magazines and by a lot of people on here and other sites
