If that's true, then could the proper authorities enter your home and search your property and check in to see if you are actually using your purchase legally? Are you publically posted so that anyone could find out that you now possess a firearm suppressor?

When a suppressor is purchased or made, then The BATFE knows about it because it is registered with them. But they do not put out any kind of publicly posted list of owners.

No where on the ATF forms 1 or 4 does it say that you give up your rights to a warrant-less search of your home. Federal Firearms License holders agree to unannounced inspections each year by the ATF though.

There is no such thing as a class 3 stamp that costs $500. NFA tax stamps are $5 for things like smooth bore pistols and pen-guns, and $200 for silencers, machineguns, and short barreled shotguns/rifles. An SOT/FFL pays $500 or $1000 a year (depending on sales) to manufacture NFA firearms. Most silencers are built as screw-on units for standard firearms whose only modification are muzzle threads for attachment.

The remarks about a warrant-less searchs are stupid. Hear that Jay, Big_al, BSL?

I do not know where pathfinder lives, but silencers are legal for civilian ownership in 36 states. If you want to buy one, it does not have to be hard. First, go to a dealer and pay for it, he will give you an ATF form 4; bring these two forms to the local sheriff for his/her signature. The signature is only acknowledgement that the buyer is not prohibited from owning a firearm; nothing else is implied by the signature. No sheriff ever got in any legal trouble for an honest signature on an ATF form. Bring the signed form back to the dealer, he will send it in with your photos, fingerprint cards, a $200 check and a single form attesting to your US citizenship. Except for obtaining the sheriff’s signature, which is difficult in some places, the only hard thing is the 1-6 month wait by the BATFE for approval. If the local sheriff does not want to sign, then you can bring the forms to others in the county who are able to sign. Ask at www.subguns.com or www.silencertests.com for more info.

You must apply for a class 3 stamp witch cost about $500. You also must know a head of time what suppressor you are going to buy and the serial number off of it. Usually you have too by a gun that has a suppressor already built into it witch a rugger .22 cal would run about $1500 to $2000. Then if you get a approved for the stamp the gov. can ask to see the weapon any time they feel like it including walking into your home to find the gun. However there is no board where your name will be posted saying you own this firearm.

when you say suppressor i assume you mean a flash suppressor correct?
i am not an expert in federal firearms laws, but i will try to point you in the right direction.
i dont believe flash suppressors are federally illegal, but state and local laws tend to be more restrictive then federal laws. your local and state police will be able to explain those local laws, and the bureau of alcohol tobacco firearms and explosives will be able to help with any federal laws. the best thing to do is ask questions to the proper authorities. yahoo answers is not the proper authority. you are going to get people saying suppressors are illegal, and others saying they are not. people here are going to tell their opinions, or what their local laws are, which doesnt help you.

Yeah, if you legally purchased a suppressor, then you would have known you would have been subject to a background check and paid the Federal Tax on it.

Firearms surpressors[silencers] are a Class 3 restricted item as classified by the BATF. You have to fill out numerous forms, go through a background check like you wouldn't believe, and have to have the support of the chief law enforcement official in your area [this is where they got you, no police chief, or sheriff is going to sign for you, because in vouching for you, their neck is also on the chopping block if you use the thing illegally].
