As you get older, your metabolism decreases. It doesn't take as much to gain weight and it takes more work to drop the pounds.

The body has a certain logic based on a simple idea: survive. Survival depends on having energy for basic demands of metabolism and repair. the most efficient way to reserve energy is to store fat- one pound is 3500 calories stored for only 2 to 5 calories of metabolism a day. A pound of muscle requires 40-60 calories a day to maintain. So here's the simple facts:

1) If you eat too much at one time or in a day, some will be stored for a "rainy day".
2) If you don't eat enough, your meals are too far apart, or you don't have enough protien, your body will shed muscle (calorie cost) and hold fat - your metabolism will crash.
3) Diet alone or with just cardio will fail for the same reasons as (2). This includes excessive length of cardio (more than 25 minutes after warm up)
4) you must lift weights to keep (or even gain) muscle. If you lose 2 lbs of fat and gain 2 lbs of muscle (break even weight wise) your metabolism will be at least 70 calories a day higher.

Hope that helps.

For some of us it's always hard to lose weight. It isn't always how much we eat, but what we eat. I counted carbohydrates once and lost 8 lbs in 1 week. I had lots of bacon & eggs for breakfast, (actually I felt like I should have gained) as much meat as you want, Don't eat anything that grows in the ground the thing is when you are not hungry, stop eating. 8oz. grape soda is 33 carbs, 8oz Minute Maid Berry punch is 32 carbs, obviously I wouldn't want to drink those. Water is best. If you don't do well with that one, try counting fat grams..for a woman to lose weight she should eat no more than 20 fat grams per day. I've done both, they both work if you don't cheat. I hope you do well, by the way, depression, I believe will contribute to weight gain.

You need to work out!!!!! diet alone cannot do it for most people if it is not built into your genes to have a high metabolism. you should try to be physically active as much as possible. this means taking the stairs instead of the elevator; parking in the far spots away from the store, any little thing you can do. Those are just daily things you can change, but you should also start joggin or speed walking, if you don't like that, maybe get into an aerobic fitness class, they offer a great chance to make new friends, as well as get into shape. The more muscle mass you have in your body, the higher your metabolism will get. THIS IS FACT!!!! In a sense, it will be easier to keep the weight off with little work if you can just get yourself to that healthy spot.

It's just more difficult from the 30's onward. The metabolism rate goes down, and fat is harder to lose. A balanced life that you stick to is best....exercise, healthy nutrition with a series of foods that don't exceed the recommended daily requirment. There's an old expression that says "You didn't put all that weight on overnight, and you're not going to lose it overnight either.". It just takes time and effort. Good luck.

your metabolism slows down in your 30's you have to exercise more or find a healthy way of eating and portion control. i am hitting my 30's too and i never had a belly but i do now that i am turning 30. i eat fruits, veges, and just not alot of junk food anymore like i used to be able too. I really love cereal i could live off of cold cereal after i eat a big breakfast i eat fruit, and cold cereal the rest of the day i dont eat supper.

Oh, I know what you can do.
You would have to have the incentive to do it though.
Good 'ol cardio workout. Go for some good bike rides. You can start jogging, swimming and playing tennis.
It's really up to how much gumption you've got.
You've got to get your heart rate pumping good and get sweaty and stuff. Maybe you can go to a gym.
