It all depends on the church, actually. Some churches the people dress up, others not so much. You could always ask the person you're going with how the people usually dress.
If you can't get in touch with them before the service a middle of the road option would be nice pants and a buttondown shirt. You could always stuff a tie in your coat pocket in case you find you need to dress it up more.

Kudos to you for thinking about it ahead of time and asking!
That demonstrates a respect that is quickly disappearing in our society.
It does depend on the church, but these guidelines have never failed me:
Business wear, or clean casual clothing that fits well and is in good repair (no holes).
Merry Christmas!

Jus be neat, clean and tidy. Who are you going to be impressing?
God doesn't care about fancy schmancy. Be yourself. It's not a gala event. You are there to worship God, and to give him your thanks, so - dress with ordinary respect, for the others in the congregation, but above all, for God. He's the reason you are going there.

Well if you are pure on your intentions of going, it shouldn't matter. God does not care what you wear as long as you are there. You shouldn't worry what people think, they are not the reason why you are going.
