I have a one-night stopover in Seoul on January 18, and would like to see some of the city while I have the chance. I want some information on travel to and from the airport, as well as recommendations of where to spend the evening (someone suggested the Shinchon area).

I land at 5:30pm. My connecting flight is at 1:30pm the next day. I have an airport hotel as part of my ticket. Would you suggest I travel into the city then back to my airport hotel that evening, and if so, how would I get back to the airport (how late does public transport run/how much do taxis cost?).

Or should I could get a room in the city centre and go back to the airport the next morning?

I have found guest houses in Daehangno area near Sungkyunkwan university. Is this a good place to sample Korean nightlife?

Thanks

You can get City Night tour bus from the Incheon airport itself..
next day you can start early. you can get the best deals from your Hotel Itself..
I would suggest you to go with city tours or taxi... do not go on your own as you do not have much time.
Hope you enjoy your time.

Take the airport shuttle bus to the city, it is much cheaper and faster than a cab. They use the carpool lane so they don't get stuck in the traffic, which will be heavy when you arrive. You can get off at the Koreana Hotel and take a cab to Daehangno.

You can sample some great nightlife around Daehangno ("College Street"), and plenty of people speak English there. Also the guest houses you are talking about in that area are nice, I assume you are referring to the Korean style places. If not, do a web search for traditional "han ok" style guest houses, there are a few really nice and affordable ones in the area of Daehangno and Sunkyunkwan. The owners also speak some English and can point you in the right direction for nightlife or whatever. You can leave the next morning around 10:30 after a leisurely Korean breakfast, and be there in plenty of time to catch your flight and do some duty free shopping if you want.

Don't stay at the Incehon airport, that would be a wasted opportunity.

Korean Air is great. 14 hours would be enough time to go out of the airport to the Seoul area and come back. However, you said he lives "near Seoul". Do you know the name of the city or area? It can take an hour or more to get into Seoul by bus depending on traffic and the part of the city you're going to. Including the Seoul suburbs, it could be less than an hour if he's to the west of Seoul, or it could be over two hours if he's toward the south or east.

Welcome to Korea.

Actually, I think you spend 3 hours for Incheon aiport to Sungkyunkwan university.
Because, the way is crowded and long and complicate.
I suggest you stay Incheon.

But if you really want to visit Seoul
I think you can enjoy nightlife around Sung-Kwan university.
However, I suggest Itaewon.
Because if you can't speak Korean,
you are unconvince around Sung-Kwan university.
Beside, around Itaewon, many people can use English.
In Seoul, subway is very useful.
You can go to Itaewon by taking down Itaewon station.

I also suggest duty free market in Incheon airport.
Maybe, the duty free market is the greater in the world.
You are able to buy on the cheap price.

I hope you spend great time in Korea.
