Ambien is a sleep medication often used to help treat those people with sleep disorders, most commonly insomnia (inability to fall asleep, stay asleep for a reasonable length of time or get good-quality sleep). Insomnia is classified in two categories: primary and secondary. Primary insomnia is unrelated to any other health problems, while secondary insomnia can be a side affect of cancer, asthma, stress, mental health issues, depression, etc. Those taking Ambien most likely suffer from chronic insomnia as opposed to intermitent or transient ("degrees" of insomnia). Chronic insomnia involves such sleeping problems as described above that have been ongoing for at least thirteen times a month. Ambien influences the chemicals in the brain that affect how one sleeps, causing unbalanced chemicals to rebalance to where they should be.

Ambien is a prescription medication and is most often intended for short-term use only. Continued use of Ambien requires extremely close doctor supervision (short-term is use is from a week to ten days).

Your ex-boyfriend may have found it difficult to stop taking Ambien as it is habit-forming (most sleep medicines carry some risk of this) and entices severe withdrawl symptoms, especially if it is stopped abruptly. The longer it has been taken, the worse the symptoms are.

As said earlier, depression can cause insomnia. However, taking Ambien while depressed can result in serious consequences, and should either not be done or be done but with a smaller dose of Ambien.

Drinking alcohol with Ambien is a bad idea as it can result in dizziness or severe fatigue. It also may react with Ambien, as alcohol is a drug. On that note, the other pills he was taking at the time may have influenced how Ambien affected him. Ambien in combination with other drugs can intensify the other drug's potency, especially if the other drug can cause drowsiness (such as pain relievers or anti-depressants). Your ex-boyfriend hopefully consulted his doctor before taking Ambien with his other medications.

While your ex-boyfriend's inability to stop taking Ambien is not a good thing, it does not mean he is or was a drug addict in the sense that he started it with the intent of using the drug not for its intended purpose. If your ex-boyfriend was depressed, he may have been on anti-depressents and/or anxiety pills, and his depression may have interrupted his sleep pattern, causing insomnia. Depressed individuals also often turn to alcohol to help them cope with their depression. Your ex-boyfriend may have engineered an extremely bad situation without realization or intention. If you are still in contact with him try discussing this with him---he may not understand what his problem is, and the sooner he does, the sooner he can fix it.

I think you should take away his pills go to somewhere the laboratory to examinate what are these? And When you said that he take with alcohol, I'm sure HE IS DRUG ADDICTION and want to get high afterall, but you have to take a little time to talk to him, or you better run away from him! He is not for you, just addict on drugs! Good Luck!

ambian.
google is your friend..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zolpidem

the clue to having a problem is the "couldn't stop using it".. this could have happened either by normal drug use .. or by recreational use.

my father ended up with a problem he did not know he had .. two different docs perscribed meds one was a breathing med and one was a pain pill that when taken together make a marviously good high .. his main doc when hearing about both meds mentioned .. don't you know that is called 'riding the dragon?" ..

to make a long story short ..weening him off this was difficult .. and he did not even know he had a problem. it took a few months.

so god knows about your friend .. since he is your "ex" it now is accidemic.

:)
