Most of the previous answers given are adequate. However, the way to get the cheapest service is to go to irs.gov on January 12th and click on the FreeFile icon. this will lead you to a list of providers who offer free or very low cost online services for particular classes of taxpayers. In previous years the IRS has had a useful facility where you answer a few basic questions about yourself and it directs you to the best service based on those answers.

Although the services are not actually endorsed by the IRS they do have to meet certain criteria. All those mentioned in the replies so far were on the list last year.

The difference between going straight to the website of your choice and doing it via the IRS website is that each company has to provide free returns for certain classes of people who otherwise would not have access to reliable tax preparation.

Don't use H&R Block's online program. They say it's free but then you get to the end and they want to charge you $20 to file your state return. (they get away with saying it's free because the federal one is free). I had to hassle with some guy on a live chat for quite awhile before they fixed it for me. I'll use a different one next time.

The MOT system is now computerised, so the DVLA can access these records to check if your car has a valid MOT. The insurance companies also share their computer records with the DVLA. However, if you don't have insurance that includes the vehicle's registration number (e.g. some fleet policies) you will not be able to use the online system.

turbotax is really user friendly. its basically tax prep for dummies. it leads you through every step. you can purchase it online and directly download the software. you can even e-file your taxes using turbotax if you dont want the hassle of printing the tax returns out and mailing them.

here is the website. make sure you get both federal and state software, if necessary.

I've use TaxAct for years with no problem. It only cost $12.95 if you preorder and you get one e-file for free. Just download and its self-installs with options for backups.
