Windows is better in general as it is alot more compatible there is only a limited amount of stuff available for macs and you often have to search hard for it.
They do have some advantages in the fact there are very few virus and spy ware.
As for which runs better Ive heard bad things about mac and windows depends how you like your computer really they are both very different.
Graphic and film editing: Mac
Gaming: PC
General use (eg checking email browsing net playing basic games): ether's fine
If you want an alternative to windows but don't want a new PC then try Linux the most simple and user friendly id say is Ubuntu Its also 100% free you just email them and say i want a copy and they will mail it to you or you can download it from there website.

Hi Joe Nickson,
I'm afraid that I'm another biased Mac user lurking around Yahoo! Answers. So, only fair that I put in my two cents too. :-) We see this same question every other day. I guess that it all depends upon what you are accustomed to using, but like I said, I love the Macintosh and Mac OS X rocks.
You should really go to a local Macintosh dealer and check out the Mac OS yourself. If you're a Windows user, you'll notice that there really isn't too many differences in how Windows works and the Mac OS X. But, there are a few subtle differences and the Unix kernel of the Mac OS has really been great for keeping computer viruses away.
Best of luck on your personal decision though, Joe. Take care.

That depends an who you are.
The kind that like Macs tend to consider themselves artistic, intellectual, and free spirited. These people tend to be artists, graphic designers, singers, painters, teachers, hippies, pot heads, and are often left-of-center Democrats too. Don't ask me why, but I can usually spot a Mac user before they bring in their computer for repair. Kids also like Macs, but they are young and don't know any better. If you need to be spoon-fed when it comes to computer buy a Mac.
For everyone else, an IBM compatible computers (Windows) is the standard. If you get a job where you use a computer, odds are it will be a Windows computer. You are doing yourself a favor if you can improve your skills on the kind of computer most widely used in the business world. Sure, there are more viruses for Windows, but only because the use of Macs is so tiny that they aren't worth the effort. Anyone saying that it is because Macs are better is only fooling themselves. The only thing keeping Macs alive is that they have become more like Windows computers. They can now use the same processors and run some key software like Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Etc.).
The post above only proves my point. New York Times Book Review HA!.... A bunch of left wing Democrats!
Oh, and by the way, Mac laptops look like Barbie doll purses.
Take that Mac sissies!

Not sure how many people noticed, but when 60 minutes did a story on the people involved in the New York Times Book Review, guess what was on everyone's desk - an iMac! Well, kinda surprised me too.
MacOS is more stable than Windows, a lot less bulky, easier to set up for the average user, and a intrinsically lot more secure (much to the chagrin of the Norton marketing people.)

Mac OS, by far. It's a better-designed operating system than Windows: due to its Unix foundations, it is secure (almost no viruses) and stable (just doesn't crash). Add to that Apple's excellent user interface and major support from developers, and you have the world's finest operating system for desktop use.
You will sometimes hear people say that there isn't much Mac software, or that Mac software is expensive. Neither of these statements is true; rather, they are myths that won't die. There is plenty of excellent Mac software out there. It is no more expensive than software for any other operating system; in fact, much of it is free (another Unix benefit).
