Sugar cookies are more sugary where as butter cookies are kind of a Brittish thing. They go good for any occassion and almost every likes them. There are also several varities of butter cookies. They all have a basic recipe, but some will have sugar crystals on top and some will me like a pinwheel and have chocolate in them. I would go with the butter cookies because anyone can eat them and everyone likes them. :)

They're similar, but definitely different. Sugar cookies are chewier; butter cookies are crumbly but rich, and are made with (obviously) more butter. Butter cookies don't rise very much, whereas sugar cookies do.

If you're bringing the cookies to a holiday party, I recommend bringing sugar cookies if there will be a lot of kids (they're also very decoration- and frosting-friendly), but butter cookies if there are mostly adults, since they seem--to me, at least--more sophisticated.

This is not so much an answer as an additional question... Do both butter cookies and sugar cookies have vanilla extract?
