Did you mess up or was it his fault? If it was his fault, then I don't think you should apologize to him for anything, but if it was your fault then yeah. And, don't let him try and tell you if it was your fault, then you shouldn't even say hi to him.

However whatever it is can't you talk to this guy/man whatever without resulting to throwing food for petes sake. For one it's not lady like and second you shouldn't waste food.
