Depends on the terrain. The 5 miles is for open space. Buildings, trees, hills can shorten that distance. Only way to tell for sure is to try it. There are other options. Do you both have PC's? You can link up together using VOIP (Voice over IP) using Skipe, or Yahoo Messenger. There is also GMRS. It's VERY similar to FRS (Family Radio Service), but you can increase the range by using a local repeater. You must get a GMRS license first. Also Amateur radio is an option. The Technician license allows you to use repeaters also, and is fairly EZ to get. Check out ARRL.Org for more info.

You can talk to them but its things like trees buildings..etc..that could get in your way...plus both walky talkies might have to have the same range...if one is shorter then one of you might hear the other talking but they might not hear you talk...hope this helps..
