Can I be forgiven, or have I blasphemed against the Holy Spirit, which the Bible calls the only unforgiveable sin?

Yeah, that should be "unforgivable", not "unforgiveable". Sorry.

If you are an atheist, then it means you do not believe in a god. As thus, there is no deity of any kind existing to forgive you.

Trick question.

If you are an atheist...and had never believed, and now are turning to God...that has nothing to do with the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is given to us once we become followers of Jesus Christ. You are applying a passage that is meant for those who were once Christians but blaspheme against the Holy Spirit later...fully knowing what they are doing. They are not forgiven, because the heart would have to be seared unconsciously against God to do so...
And, yes...of course you can be forgiven. Jesus died for all of us...it is up to us if we truly want that forgiveness and grace offered by his sacrifice. The question is, do you have the courage to accept his gift?

It's funny to me that the submitter seems to be the only person who knows his bible well enough to know that it DOES that that blasphemy against the holy spirit is UNFORGIVABLE. But, here's the deal: You're an atheist (I am too - glad to have you aboard), so you don't beleive there's anyone to forgive you. Secondly, why are we all convinced that we need forgiveness? The bible says that even babies are sinful and need forgiveness - for what? Don't say sin-nature either. Prove it. Why would a merciful god punish a baby who has not had a chance to sin yet? What a crock. You have nothing that a "god" needs to forgive you for, my friend. Humans, maybe, and that can be easily taken care of with our own innate morality.

My understanding of the "only unforgivable sin" is for those that have SURE knowledge that God exists...in other words, "to see the sun and deny it shines." Most of us don't have THAT kind of knowledge. Believe it or not, God doesn't want us to have that kind of knowledge b/c he loves us and knows that some just aren't ready for it. Just b/c someone told you about Jesus growing up doesn't mean that you know enough to blaspheme the Holy Ghost.

So of course, if you choose to repent, you'll be forgiven :)

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit might not be what you think it is.

In the context of the verses it was that the Pharisees said that the works that Jesus did were done by the power of Satan. But in reality they were done by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Are you positive there is no God or are you an Agnostic?

The unforgivable sin is the one where you know for a fact in your heart who Jesus is and that His claims are true yet go to your grave unmoved. So, yes, you can be forgiven and you have as yet not committed the unforgivable sin.

a repentant atheist may certainly be forgiven. The scriptures dealing with blasphemy of the Holy Spirit must be taken in context. Do not worry...you may be forgiven...do not wait.

I believe that earth is a really tough school and life is simply a test. I do not believe you can be forgiven for wrong answers. I believe when you fail you are expected to try again and work harder. And what if you refuse? It is your choice how many times you repeat the 2nd grade. I also believe you can be an atheist and a productive, delighful and wonderful person. I hope that helps. haniels_host,alexis
