Great question! From looking at one, one would think it's just 4 triangular piesces of cloth sewn together; but if one cuts out 4 triangles, and sews them together, one will end up witha bizarre pointy hat.

THe reason is it is 4 3d triangles over each other. The triangles are triangles imposed ofer a sphere (your head), and not on a flat surface, so instead of 180 degrees, these triangles have to have 270. WHat you need to do is make the three angles of each triangle 90 degrees each, then connect them with a curved line. DO this on black suede.

Now cut them out and sew them together. Take a piece of ribbon, and sow the bottom edge to the desired shape, binding the edge with the ribbon.

YOu now have a haredi looking yarmulke. Do it with satin in various colors, and you have the unrelated My Cousin Bernard Gave This to Me at his Bar Mitzvah Celebration yarmulke. That one is dorky.
