it's the spiritual clensing and peace making in the mind. it clears your body of stress, worries, and pain. it is great after stressful days and tough workouts. just put on some comfortable clothes, play some gentle music(if you want), and sit cross legged on the floor with a straight back. clear your mind, think happy, think ocean waves and gentle sounds. it will be a great expierence

There are many different forms of meditation.
Yoga is meditation through body contortion. Tantra is meditation through sex. Meditation can be attained by focusing the mind or by a state if non thinking. Prayer can be meditative. Sufi Muslims spin themselves. MesoAmerican cultures use dances. Ethnogenics can be used. Meditation is a very broad term.

Not an easy answer exactly. You can think of it as mental exercise to develop attention, awareness and concentration. Listening to somebody talking in a hypnotic voice while burning candles and incense is not it. The best thing is to visit a temple for meditating Buddhists. I advise against Pure Land because they try to make it like Christianity, and dependant on faith. I would recommend looking for a Zen style because they are totally about meditation technique.
The point of picking Koans that seem meaningless and choosing boring activities is to train the mind to be able to be directed at a specific thing and not to wander. It is very difficult.
Like I said, hard for me to explain. It is best to learn it by doing it.
There are also physical meditation styles. Yoga is one of those styles. I have never tried Yoga. I hear it is very good for physical strength and flexibility as well as mental strength. Taoist Tai Chi is another. The idea of the physical styles are that you pay attention to and perfect your movements.

"Meditation" is a catch phrase. There are many such mental techniques aimed at different experiences and different populations. Look at the book "The Experience of Meditation" to see a good sample.

Extreme relaxation. Silencing the mind. Turning off the internal dialog. It is easy to learn. There is nothing sinister about it.

quiet internal thoughts.
think of your internal thoughts as a television screen with snow on it...you know that satatic stuff...looks like snow....
when you meditate youre trying to clear your mind...so in a way its like trying to clear the static off of the tv so you can see the image...the more you do it the more the image becomes clearer.
random, off the top of my head stuff...whadda ya think?
